When was the last time a horse was verifiably reported as stolen by a stranger, rather than being sold while on loan, disappeared while on loan, taken by the other party in a broken business/personal relationship or simply strayed and later found?
Just why would anyone steal a horse when they can steal a carbon fibre framed pushbike worth more and easier to hide, transport and sell?
I'm sorry to bang on about this but I hate to think of people losing sleep over a stranger theft possibility that is vanishingly rare these days.

I agree with this, I also don't actually understand why it's seen as more likely on a major road? Stealing a horse is hardly a crime of opportunity- you'd also want plenty of time uninterrupted in case it turned out to be a tit to load. And why would you want to do it where there would be potentially lots of witnesses?
If anyone is stealing horses (and I agree it's unlikely) they are surely driving around a range of local yards looking for types that are quick to sell and locations where they could load horses without being seen by anyone?
Damage to the gate or fence and the horses getting onto the road, or possibly a passer by leaving an open gate is a much higher risk.
