Horse Struggling To Loose Weight: Correct Feed/Quantities? HELP!

He isn't overweight. BE wouldn't allow it with them being so safety conscious and putting horse/rider wlefare first, and he is only at BE90 level so its no more work than a 95cm ODE (which I am not going to lie, I see often severely obese horses compete in). I know, I thought it was crazy amount at first, but it's worked and thats the main point and there is no issue with his health/feet what-so-ever. He has cracking good feet.

Wasting your breath kallibear. This one knows what she's doing!!

Fwiw though i completely agree... Seeing cob owners feeding mix makes me want to cry.. you have restored my faith in humanity.

Well said. FWIW, I've seen some frighteningly fat horses competing at BE, and from where I'm standing cob owners need to be more careful than anyone about condition and fitness. Hooning around xc with that sort of weight on their already stocky frames is just asking for trouble.

I agree, hence why he is limited to BE90 Level. I would never compete anything thats obese. He will never ever be the lightest or slimmest of frames, as that's his build, but he is far from overweight, if he were BE woudn't allow it. Infact Im considering not entering one of my other horses in the last one of the season as due to this rain (finally needed rain!) a flush of grass has appeared and he's put on a few pounds for the first time in 2 years..Typical!

So now this is a debate on spelling? Oh how I adore the equine community. And picking on usernames, how low can you go? I just have it as something easy to remember (sorry for clearly irritating you?)..

:D Excellent. My good deed for the day is done. :D

I'm also going Eeep at the price thats £15 a bag, at over a bag a week. I couldn't afford to shovel that amount of rubbish into my horses!

*head desk* I can see by your username I'm arguing with a child.. an uneducated one at that. Check the dictionary for the word 'shaln't' you can have a lolly if you find it.

Well if you are arguing with a child, then perhaps you should be a little kinder!

Tbh your post doesn't make you look much older than one.

Hence my comment earlier about being easier on the wallet if you don't take feed companies' advice at face value! Christ I remember mix being under a fiver a bag - and even then it would've lasted months... Not a chance - not when grass grows for free in my field and hay/straights are a fraction of the price for just as much benefit!

Thanks Moomin, I'm far from a child, I wanted to say the same thing but rose above it all and couldn't be bothered. But I'm no expert either, hence why I seeked for a little advice and look what happened! haha They just don't get that my horse is clearly fine, if he wasnt Id revert back to this take peoples advice. It was clearly a mistake me posting this, Ive said sorry and people have got caught up in this and started generalising opinions, what else can I do? haha.

I remember being able to go showjumping when I was little and it be £4 a class, now its about £10 a class. The world is going crazy :(

I think pegasus mix is still under a tenner. Horrible stuff.
OP I have to ask.. if you ate maccies every day of your life knowing it was bad or you but did it anyway because you looked fine.. would that be ok too?

Is OP me? and no, but he is only on this very short term as I have explained in here before many times. I've used Pegasus before when I just needed to grab something quick, and its vile.

i strongly advise you watch supersize me. Even unsuitable foods for a short length of time can be damaging. Cobs are not designed to process the high levels of starch in mixes.. why do you think balancers like low cal exist? You will not be doing him any good feeding him competition mix. Even if for a short time. Please if you are going to ignore everything that has been said, at least do some research.

Eating macdonalds 'short term' is still bad for you.

Pegasus mix is exactly the same things as competition mix. Grains, cereals and molasses. Haribo for Horses. There are far healthier ways of giving him energy than loads of competition mix.

I have, and I was going to put him on a feed balancer like before he went on Blue Chip Original Feed Balancer. But I need something just to give him that extra 'oomph'. I have been doing research, I wouldnt have bought or gone down this route otherwise. And I have done even more tonight and whichever website I go on or look up, they all say a horse of his type/weight/height needs 2kg of hard feed and 6-8kg of forage.

Im honestly just getting bored of this now. At the end of the day, this is my horse and thankyou for your advice. And if it doesnt work/something happens then on my head be it.

A good method for working out how much to feed in lbs is to take the height of the pony in hands
14.1 - 2 = 12.1
12.1 x 2 = 24.2 lbs
This is the total amount of food your pony needs each day.
75% is fibre, 25% concentrate
18.15lbs / 8.18kg fibre
6.05lbs / 2.75kg concentrate

The type of concentrate you then chose is important as you want to add energy and not condition.
