Hi my 12yo ex racer has just started going disunited in canter. He has been in consistent work for the last year and at the start of his schooling he struggled with his canter leads but came right in the end with no problems. The last few times I've schooled him he has started again; he has struck off on the right leg but changed/disunited after a few strides. Does it on a circle and on the long side, more so on the left rein. Is it my riding putting him off balance or something potentially more serious? He rarely does it on the lunge, but I find it strange that he has just suddenly started doing it when ridden out of the blue. Also any ideas of exercises to help him? Thanks

I would start by having his back checked (mine does this when he has an issue with his sacroiliac/ pelvis) making sure the saddle is ok andthat you are sat straight and not twisted yourself.
Trot him up an watch from behing are his hips level and his muscles doing the same on both sides?

Would check out back but also hocks. Our mare did this, increased to bucking. She was diagnosed with Bone Spavin 2 yrs ago. You could feel her throw your weight to the other side slightly obviously to make it more comfortable for herself.

Thank you for all the feedback will get him booked in for a back check on pay day and he had his saddle refitted a couple of months ago. Hoping is just stiffness and nothing too serious but will get back checked as he is due to be looked at.
