Ellie has always been a fussy eater - when we got her, she would not touch any kind of mix - nuts and oats were all she would eat. Over the years, I've managed to persuade her that some mixes are actually quite nice, and last year she suddenly decided that sugarbeet was pretty good, too. One thing she has always been staunchly against, however, is any kind of chaff. Even if I just mixed a handful into a bran mash, she wouldnt touch it - she'd nose it all out of the way, taking great care to gobble everything else, leaving just a pile of soggy chaff in the corner of the manger. We tried her on Dengie's Alfa A, which our ponies used to adore, and that was no better - she hated it. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago I went to Countrywide and they had a bag of out of date alfalfa chaff for just £3, so we bought it for the guinea pigs. Ellie snuffled over my shoulder as I was putting it in the feed bin the other day, so I gave her a handful and guess what! She adores it! She eats it like it was hay - I could fill her manger up with it, and she'd munch away all day. She actually seems to prefer it to her nuts now!

Although I'm hoping I can keep her interested in it now - it means I can bulk out her dinners a bit more, and cut down a bit on the expensive nuts!
