Horse suddenly won't stand up in trailer

My old boy had exactly the same issue. He'd load fine, but would then throw himself around something crazy. We tried closing him in tightly to start with, but that just made him worse. Then we took the partitions out and travelled him with a full breach bar, and we never had trouble again! Meant that he couldnt travel in company, but at least he COULD travel!

I'm another having had exactly same problems. Ifor 506 brand new, and now my horse only travels if he has full breach / breast bars. He travels well like this but leans his bum on breach bar. At least he can still travel though. It happened out of the blue, him struggling to stand up no matter how slowly I drove. He also goes well in a lorry but that's not an option for me.
Hope you can try full length bars and that your mare will be fine like this too. Let us know how you get on!

My friends horse started doing this after years of travelling like a peach. The vet found some stiffness in his neck which they use for balance and he was very tight through his shoulders so wouldn't splay his front legs properly.

He had got himself cast a couple of times as he developed itching from midges and would roll vigorously but also he would get down and scratch his belly with his hind leg underneath him and his front legs out. We think this might be the reason plus a bit of arthritis from his eventing days especially from a fall he had. Some extra physio has really helped him and he may require some steroid injections in his neck as he gets older.

If it is suddenly happening I would be looking for a physical reason and not just the back.

Not really an update but got to the yard this morning and horse has a leg the size of an elephant (It was fine last night!! :-( Rang the vet, talked through it, cold hosed for 20 mins, walked up and down - not too bad on movement - happy to go out so turned out (with vet approval) Kept on checking up on her throught the day. Brought her in this afternoon leg just as big - it might by lymphonitis (sp) vet coming out tomorrow if it hasn't gone down - no punctures or cuts, probably caused by bruising when scrabbling around in the trailer.

Checked the tyre pressures - back ones a bit low so topped them up
Managed to buy a breast bar for £45 - bargain

Now need to have horse fit to travel to test it out.

That rocking horse in the shop window is looking very inviting :-( :-(

two things to try - full sizes breech bars, apparently works a treat with some horses
The other thing is my mare started to do this for no apparent reason and turned she was not sound in front, travelled fine herringbone and rearfacing, so could be worth checking with the vet
Hope you get it sorted

I had exactly the same issues (in an Ifor) Purchased full width breast & breach and he was much improved. But the best thing I ever did was buy a Rice Richardson Supreme Ultra. They all load & travel perfectly with the partitions in place.

Haven't read all post completely but Mistatiger at the ripe old age at 17 decided to fall over in the trailer and the solution was to travel him on the left side of the trailer. The other one I know of, sad to say, that developed this condition turned out to have navicular so might be worth an X-ray. Have heard of a few with this condition but hope I haven't panicked you.
