Horse summer camps.

Does anyone here go to horse camps in the warmer weather?

I've seen one called Bobbis horse camps in August at a not too far equestrian centre from me and i was wondering if it may be of benefit? It has a novice/nervous horse section too which sounds ideal for Dan and me.

Anyone had any experience of these?

Take a look at Active Rider Camps, I have worked at a number of these and everyone seems to have a good time and get on well together.
 
There was a good write up last year in a horse magazine, I think it was called your horse. I was going to go before my horse injured herself....they look fab:D
 
I've only been once and had a bad experience (first day instructor said my pony wasn't allowed back then borrowed neighbour's pony napped on the xc course, refused every jump etc i fell off several times!)
I found it really pressurising as everyone wanted to gallop and jump as high as poss etc.
Wouldn't recommend to someone not confident (although may boost your confidence!)
Everyone else seemed to love it but never again! Just personal opinion!
 
every summer (for 3 years now) i go to this horse riding place in poland. it's sort of a summer camp but its really good and friendly and everything! :D

The one im planning on has a novice/nervous horse and rider section.
 
They're one thing we have loads of in NI. BHS Ireland runs 5 weeks of them in the summer, and NI riding clubs run 3 fantastic ones each year. I think it's all about finding the type of camp that suits you personally and your horse. I like ones where I do lots of riding, I'm really pushed and come away having learned lots, other people like the social aspect, some like the type with lectures and demos, some like hacking and having fun :)
 
I've been to an equi-events one and an active rider one.

Out of the two i'd recommend the equi-events one - I found it friendly and the quality of the instruction just brilliant. The active -rider one I had two 'dressage' lessons with an instructor who stated at the beginning of the first lesson that she was a show jumper and didn't know anything about dressage (?) and then spent the whole of the second lesson focussed on the other girl in the lesson while I walked around in a loose rein. A couple of other people had a similar experience with the same instructor, however, the other instructors I had ; showjumping and XC were fantastic, so it was probably just an unfortunate piece of planning on behalf of the organiser but they were expensive and totally useless lessons for me.

Also to both of them, I went on my own and found the A-R one pretty cliquey too, possibly because it was a large camp and there were several big groups of friends who had all come together, whereas the equievents was smaller, a bit more informal and most people came on their own or as a couple and everyone was friendly and welcoming. Both were held at somerford which has fantastic facilities purpose built.
 
I've booked up for that one, it's my first camp too. But friends on my yard have been lots. I'm nervous when it comes to jumping but I've e-mailed Bobbie and she assured me I'd be fine. Can't wait :)
 
I have done an active rider camp, would say I'm a fairly average riding club competitor. Had a fantastic time, if I had a sound horse I would be back like a Shot :D we had A really mixed bunch ability wise but seemed to work. The sj started at "poles" and went up from there.

You're nervous?? Ive only been riding since 2007 and only jumped a few poles in the school.

Tbh im hoping by the time August arrives i'll be a bit more adventurous, but as long as its fun i dont really care.

Its all about the fun for me..and Dan has to enjoy himself too.

I go to "horse camps" for fluffy-bunny-nh-gullible people. I'm going to the Steve Halfpenny clinic in June, which is 50% riding and#50% watching others, I love those. Pub trips, and sloe gin tend to feature. And I'm also going to one with Amanda Barton in April where it's a combination of lessons with her and riding out on the Ashdown Forest. Hopefully if I can scrape the cash I'm going to go back for another one the same in the Ashdown Forest in July.
I love it when the interesting things start to happen.
I hope everyone going off on adventures has a great time. :-)
 
Ooo where are the Ashdown Forest ones?

Have been on a few as my old instructor used to run them every year. Loved it! No pressure as we were all 'ladies' (haha) of a certain age; oh and a couple of token blokes. 3 days of bliss with pony sleeping in the lorry.

FF - they run them at Judd Wood Farm near Tonbridge which look fun and am thinking about going this year.
 
I normally go on the country treks pony camp which is great if you love having fun around horses and galloping around. At the end of the week there's also a show which is amazing!:)
 
There is a great camp at Plumpton College in East Sussex in August. It's called Grassroots but there is always a waiting list. It is fantastic. This year will be my fourth year there. There are about 40 people and you can either camp or stay in the student rooms.

It is 3 nights/4 days, great instructors mostly, you can do a bit of everything, aimed at RC, happy hackers, people doing it for fun. Jumping goes up to about 1 m I guess and starts with poles/baby jumping.

Pachesham EC also do a few camps each year. Haven't been but am thinking about it this year. Although the thought of actual camping makes me shudder.

Also, there is a Trec camp at Plumpton College at the beginning of August. It is the first year so don't know what it will be like but am hoping to go to it as well.
 
I've been to three Richard Maxwell week long training camps, taking my horses with me, which was amazing. Flatwork, polework, SJ & XC. LOts of fun, learning & most importantly, support! Pretty sure he's not doing any more just now though, sadly.

I've been to 2 camps at Plumpton, summer 2010 and summer 2012, one by Kent Wildlife Trust and one by Hadlow Riding Club. I've booked for the Trec camp this year and am hoping to do the HRC one again. Plumpton is a great venue, indoor schools, farm hacking and north downs hacking :D
 
My riding club had two camps last year at Keysoe in Beds. I didnt know people very well to start with but was made very welcome. Instructors were great. I had only had my new horse for a few weeks when I went so it was a fab chance to see what we could do together.

I have just sent my deposit off for May's camp even though I havent got a horse to ride at the moment - hoping to find one to borrow before then!

I looked for ActiveRider camps but didnt find one close by.

I'm just re-visiting this thread to thank those who provided links for the SE
:)

Have just gone & booked into the Hadlow RC camp in August :o hope HF & I have got ourselves together by then, its something to aim at for us tho :)
