Hi all. I've casually advertised my mare for sale but im picky where she goes and as yet havent found her the right home. The time has come that i really need to get sorted and i'm wondering if any one has any experience or knows of any horse that would be an ideal swap...

My horse is 15.3 7yo mare. Absolutely fantastic all rounder, she has been out competing in all disciplines always placed dressage, loads of 1sts and 2nds. She loves jumping, never stops. XC she is awesome. She has evented BE intro placed 9th her first time out. 100% hacking, alone and in company etc i really cant fault her. Same when ridden after some time off.

BUT i'm looking for something bigger and younger. Idealy to make between 16-17hh and 3-5 years old. To compete in BYEH and event. Must have the potential to go at least novice eventing, so good movement and natural ability to jump. No experience needed. Un broken horses would be ideal!

Im in North Yorkshire. Any ideas?! Should i just bite the bullet and pay to advertise her properly, stick to the free sites or ask around?! im not very experienced selling horses, to be honest this will be the first one i've ever sold and i am really struggling i love her to pieces

I would swap for her. Can offer two 2yrs olds, both cracking characters, bombproof to handle - one dun the other a spotty - so you get two for one.

Downside is that they are both Dartmoor Hill ponies - not big enough??

On a sensible side she sounds fab. Its worth giving it a shot as an exchange but I would have thought you would find a better home for her by trying to sell as you'll be able to be more picky.

I can offer a swop too, 3 year old, 4 in June, homebred, bay filly, 3/4 TB and 1/4 NF. Well handled, bitted, saddled and ready to back. Only thing is she is 15 hands, lol, a bit better than a Dartmoor hill pony but not much!

Seriously, I too think you need to sell her, rather than swop - unless you can find someone who has overhorsed themselves and wants something a bit older and better behaved, of which there must be people if you can find them!

If you keep her another 6 months I might well want to swop my lovely homebred filly, who will be 3 in July, by Catherston Springsteen to make 16.1, since I'm not keen on nappy exciatble youngsters!! ;0)

Hmm 2 for the price of one...tempted!! However not entirely sure they fit the bill

I was thinking some one that has something thats too much for them or a youngster that that needs breaking. I want something with serious potential. Probably need to advertise properly, any sites you can recomend that wont break the bank?

I'd stick her on the Pony Club Classifieds - £18 for a month. She sounds well suited to a competitive teenager coming off ponies. I'd probably wait a month or so though, when more people are likely to start looking.

Why do you feel you need to sell/swap her - what is she not doing for you?
You certainly don't look too big on her. Or do you just feel you need something bigger (don't forget the likes of Charisma, Headley Britannia, Stroller - they don't have to be 16.2 to win at top level)
Or is that what you do - buy youngsters, bring them on and then sell them. If the latter then best advertise her for sale and look for new one when you know what you have to spend. People tend to start looking around Feb (weather permitting) and if she is really as good as you say then in theory you shouldn't have a problem. Suggest you be specific about any competition results in advert - placings and events and if she has BE record be prepared for people to want to see it.

Best of Luck

To be honest you will be best biting the bullet and advertising, like Horse and Hound. She sounds as though you could get decent money for her. doing a swap you may end up with rubbish, and with a couple of thousand in your pocket you could get a nice unbroken horse with real potential to event.
There is a few nice youngsters were I work, all have been shown in hand, bitted etc and excellent conformation. I could also put you in tocuh with a few studs in cumbria. One had a horse win at hoys this year, the other produces VERY NICE event horse types, and all for reasonable prices. Good luck :)
I am in Cumbria btw.

I would sell! Unless you get a super quality youngster I dont think you're going to get a fair deal by swap. Your mare seems a fantastic horse (I'd love her if you weren't so far!) and you could get good money for her if advertised in the right places. Pop her on the PC website and Horsequest and no doubt you'll get lots of suitable interest, she seems a lovely type. Good luck :)

I do like them a little bigger, but my aim is to compete in BYEH then take something up the grades eventing. I Feel that her limit would be novice level (jumping wise, shes fab on the flat) and i want to go further, with soemthing ive produced myself from a 4/5yo.

Yes i think i will have to advertise properly then see what price i get! Thanks

Thanks for that, out of interest, what do you think price wise? Do you have a link to a website for the ones in cumbria?

Yes i thought horsequest would be a good one. Will do PC aswell. What do you think for price?

I have done several successful swaps with a lady based in Yorkshire.
Im in Somerset - swap everything unseen / untried (videos are seen etc but thats all)

Every horse has been exactly as she said (as have mine from my side) and i now wont deal with anyone else.

If you want her name / number - pm me

I disagree actually. I think you could get a nice youngster as a swap for her, probably with some event lines.

There are lots of people who take on youngsters thinking that they will get a great horse in the end, then realising that they aren't able to/don't want to deal with all the work that has to go in to producing them and would much rather have something ready to roll.

You'd need to filter through all the crap, and don't advertise for a swap unless you are on your game and prepared to do that. You'll get a load of kids trying to swap you their bog pony colt foal for your mare :p

Also, if you see a youngster advertised you like, contact them, they might be interested in a swap! The worst they can say is no, they aren't interested!

I have been on the other end, I had a rather green, but well bred show quality section B, who was just wasn't what I wanted. I saw a pony advertised, nothing special, just an irish pony, 6yo, quiet. I emailed and aksed if she'd be interested ina swap as I needed to move him on before I got another, and she was! I went and saw the mare, she didn't come to see my gelding, bought her mare to me in the trailer, took my boy away and that was that!

If your horse is exactly as you describe, then I'd say you're looking at decent money, as she's exactly what everyone is looking for. Safe, sensible, turns hoof to most things, talented, size to suit most, plus a looker to go with it.

Hiya

I have a well bred TB by Calcutta, who is 4 next year, backed in Oct and then turned away ready to produce for next year. His sire raced and won over £200k in ten races and his dam was an eventer until she retired sound to stud, her other off spring has done well in showing, eventing and racing. I have advertised in the adhorse and there are pictures and a video of him. We are looking for something a bit older and yours looks good, I'll swap.

Your mare sounds lovely and I have the ideal swap but my husband won't let me!!! Says we brought him into this world and have done nearly 3 years with him and so we need to see it through! He is 16hh+ now and by Mill Law. Lovely looking, jumps for fun and is a stunning gold colour. We call him 'special' but he is easily going to turn into the best horse I have ever had....not the easiest but hey ho!!! Good luck with your mare :)
