Has anyone ever exchanged horses, instead of selling?

I have a 13hh Sec B, 4yo, who after loosing my small jockey, is being totally wasted now (cry, why can't I be tiny?). He is part broken, but obviously I have only done groundwork since he's been with me, I probably could ride him, but I don't want to as he is quite fine and only young.

Obviously the market is terrible at the mo, and he is advertised for sale but I have had no interest in him, and for what he is (and will be) he is cheap, and I am willing to drop the price on that (shhhh).

I would be totally happy to swap him for something bigger that I could ride, similar age, not bothered if it needs a bit of work etc etc. Anything sort of 14/15hh, cobby sort, doesn't need to be flashy like him.

Has anyone ever done this, did it work out well? I am considering exchanging with a dealer too if I can't do it privately (really hoping too though), any experiences on that?

I have exchanged via a dealer but expext only a small amount of the value of the horse you'd be exchanging for.

Its a bit like trading a car in, you get very little for the old one.

When I had my daughters cob up for sale I also said I'd swap for something a bit smaller, my god the rubbish people tried to palm me off with :(
Its certainly worth putting it in your advert, nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that :D

I had a little mare who I exchanged for a super little colt a couple of years ago, I think I got the better end of the deal, I put 'swap considered' in my ad, and it all worked out fine.

As missyme10 said 'nothing ventured, nothing gained'

Good luck :)
