Hey! I was wondering what games you could play while riding horses in 3 or more? I was thinking horse tag, has anyone played that before?

Yes, tag is great fun. We also play a game where 1 rider has a scarf or a bit of rope tucked into a pocket and the others have to retrieve it.

“Formation”ride or drill...when we had 4 riders we would have two 1s and two 2s and one of us would call out instructions which we would ride. For instance...”whole ride single file A to C in walk..1s track left at C 2s track right pick up trot at corner ride one circuit of arena etc etc”
we (all adults over 50) had a great time.

Musical statues, grandmother's footsteps, the traffic light game (and you can add extra instructions for more advanced riders), Simon Says, Scavenger hunts.

How do you play grandmothers footsteps and the traffic light game?

Tag is excellent, but only for confident horses and riders as it can get a bit too competitive!!!

Simon Says also needs policing well if played by adults especially. Simon has asked us to do some really silly things in his time!

If you train them to push a fitness ball, you can do football, or use a broomstick to push the ball.

Drill rides are fun.

Once we got a hat with velcro on, and your team mate had to try to throw soft balls on your hat so they will stick. That made a horse or two dodge. I think the game was from B&M or somewhere similar, called Butthead or something.

We also did an obstacle course, whilst carrying a jug of water. There was a jump to finish. Make sure you train the horse to expect splashy water first or that too gets a bit too exciting.

There’s lots of variations of the traffic light game, but the one I know involves someone in the middle calling out colours - red, amber, green - all of which correspond to a movement. e.g. red = halt, amber = walk, green = trot. Then you can make it more ‘advanced’ by adding commands like: car pool (ride side by side), purple = canter etc

The last person to react in a round is out. The winner is the person who remains at the end.
