Hello, I’m wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar with their horse. My ID mare has a very short straggly tail, it almost looks like a foals tail (she is 16). It is thick at the top near her dock but thins out to the bottom and is so short! I have never seen her rubbing her tail in all the 6 years of owning her neither ar there any signs of her having rubbed her tail like knots or bald patches at the top. I have also never seen any of the horses in her field chew her tail.

i tend not to brush her tail with a tail brush because I don’t want any more hair to come out, instead I use a body brush on it. I have been using caster oil on it I usually leave it in to condition for a few hours then wash out. I have noticed this has made her tail thicker but I’ve not noticed anything in the way of it growing in length. Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how I can get her tail to grow ? her mane seems to grow fast it’s just her tail.

I've used MegaTek Rebuilder on a sweet itch sufferer, to great effect.

About £20ish for a bottle but lasts ages, oh and smells lovely too!

Any ideas how to resolve this? Mare has had tail been nibbled by foals...

I've not found that there is anything effective except time to regrow the tail. We did get a false tail for one mare who had hers eaten, she was a carriage horse so needed to look her best, it was basically a "hair extension" that was plaited in when needed.

To stop the nibbling, something nasty tasting but not poisonous. One of the various "crib stop" sprays should work.
