I'm shocked at this video. I hate bull fighting anyway, but now the wimpish matador is on a horse!!!

Wouldn't it be great for some animal power- horse throws rider off, bull tramples him and then the bull and horse do a spanish walk!

Hope the link works- if not it's on youtube and title is the same as this post subject.

Lovely video

how about this for a graphic reminder of what happens when it goes wrong...............

It's just hideous.

The horse is actually doing what it's told, not taunting - and trying to give as much distance as possible.

In Portugal, where this was probably filmed, the picadors are almost always on horseback. The lusitano was bred as a bullfighting horse and are trained in "dressage movements" to avoid being gored by the bull. I can't say that I enjoy the sport but it is steeped in the Portuguese culture so I suppose you have to respect that. We have a holiday pad in Portugal so have seen one once! The bull doesn't get killed in Portuguese bullfights, unlike Spain.

Cannot watch the vid, but there is nothing new about Picadors, and the horses are trained beautifully and a lot of them absolutely adore their work. Makes my blood boil that people who do not understand bullfighting and have no knowledge regarding the breeding and care that goes on behind the scenes get all arsey about it...

But if the bull ends up being stabbed to death (isn't that what happens) then surely what goes on behind the scenes becomes almost irrelivent???

The bulls have a better life than those that go to normal slaughter - which would you prefer when, at the end of the day, you are bred for your meat...there is also a chance you will win to live another day

If the matador/picador does their job well, there is no need to liken the kill to *stabbing* at all.

As ever, we all have our views, which makes up the rich fabric of life

Absolutely and I bow to your greater knowledge on the subject.

Still don't like it though

We went to barroca d'alva for an event and bull fighting is the majority of the family's life, they put on an amazing display in the evening with their horses and explained how they trained etc! I've always been against bull fighting but the Portugese are amazing and changed my views now I understand it alot more!

Weezy did you watch the video I put up? - I have to agree with Amy May here and say regardless of how well the bull is treated they still have to die an agonising death.
Then there's there's the horse who may or may not have been gored by the bull - what are your thoughts on that?

this subject seems to come around once a week or so

I challenge anyone to got to rural Portugal (not the Algarve) and stay in the towns/villages where this is the main way of life and to come back with a more balanced POV like yours. Of course there is good and bad horse training when it comes to bullfighting as there is in any discipline, this clip illustrates the good training-show me a GP dressage horse as athletic as this one!

I cant say I enjoy bullfighting but I will defend the heritage of horsemanship from it.
oh and btw Portuguese bulls are more often than not, killed by a butcher outside of the ring. killing the bull inside the ring is illegal.

I think the whole thing is sick, I don't care if the horses are beautifully trained and that the bull has a fighting chance. But like everything else in life it comes down to the nature of human beings and the importance of life whether it be human or animal.

I'm not disagreeing with you or trying to pick a fight, but isn't bull fighting a way of life to some countries just like hunting is to our country?

Yeah your right it comes down to the importance of life but people could say exactly the same about our culture

I take it you are a strict vegan?

as Loopyloop said, this is a way of life for these people.

What right have we to critisise their customs.

These rituals have been going on for thousands of years.

I once attended a Bullfight in Barcelona, the atmosphere is amazing...would I go again?? NO but I am pleased that I experienced it!!

The problem is you are comparing Portugese bullfighting which is AMAZING!! To a Mexican one which is barbaric.

Firstly note the first horse is not blind folded and the horsemanshsip is exceptional. In Portugal bullfighting is becoming increasingly bloodless, read up about it on Wikipedia.

Portugal is the only place I would go to a bullfight.

I see you were replying to Lincolstables but thought your post was also quite relevant to my comment. I Wasn't intentionally comparing Portugese and Mexican bullfighting, just stating that Pinkweasel has tarred the whole of bullfighting with the same brush and felt the need to raise the point of how different it is and how passionate they are about it in Portugal, it's their culture/way of life.

We were at Barroca d'alva eventing but I can say the highlight of the month I spent there was watching the way they trained for the bull fighting (obviously none of the bull's were killed) the horses are so graceful yet powerful and breathtaking to watch. And learnt so much from talking to the riders.

TBH I dont care about cultures which kill animals in such a way. I dont support fox hunting in this country for example! I think tradition CAN be a bad thing, lots of things used to be tradition but were thankfully wiped out (drowning witches for example!). Spanish Bull fighting is a horrific "sport". Why cant we have an opinion on it?

I wasn't saying people aren't entitled to an opinion, was merely putting my own opinion across and the fact not all bull fighting is as barbaric as some videos you see, I'm not saying I agree with it either, just stating that it was a way of life to these people like hunting is to alot of country people in England. I don't hunt myself but I don't chose to pass judgement on people that do.

Although must say glad they wiped out the drowning of suspected witches, think I'd of been drownt years ago........
