horse tax ?? wtf?

Have just rung to register to go to one of the public meetings. The number in the HHO article to ring at Defra is wrong, it should be 0207 238 4953. That's the number I have been given.

That said, in Germany, they charge dog tax and depending on where you live in can cost a lot... where I have friends, it costs something like €250.00 per annum and any more dogs on top of that costs even more!!!!
 
Well I would go, there's one just up the road in Shepton Mallet, but unfortunately its during office hours, and so I will be at work...grrr

Why can't they have these things in the evening so that people who work full time (and are already paying bucket loads of tax) can go too!

Whe you consider the cost of eradicating equine flu in Australia a couple of years ago you would probably be happy to pay it - how they will police it is another matter.

Australia shut down all movement of horses when the flu struck including several riders who had been competing a great distance fromhome. They weren't allowed to move their horses so had to stay on site. The government funded the majority of expenses involevd while in quarenteen. In the meantime many equine based businesses went bankrupt as a result of no income. The effect was devastating, broodmares scheduled to come to NZ stallions, stuck at home and also unable to travel to a local stallion.

They did it though - equine flu contained and eradicated from Australia. NZ has only recently lifted an extensive quarenteen for horses coming in from Australia. Fortunately we diidn't get it here in NZ.
 
I would like to attend but there are no meetings in Wales - maybe we won't get taxed

Hmmm, I get a feeling this is a bit like the passports - making money out of honest people. Somehow, I don't think people who own hundreds of pikey ponies or hill ponies are going to pay up. If it ever comes in, that is.
 
I can't get the time off to go to the one in Esses either.... a a cunning plan me thinks putting it in work time so no one can go
 
They seem to be keeping this really quiet, and have few meetings, at few locations, in working hours, so few people attend. Is this a ploy so that they can say they 'consulted the public' without actually getting much feedback?

And what the h*ll are the passports for??

I think every horse owner should just refuse to pay. they can't fine or take everyone to court!
