My friend sadly lost her boy on Monday after a field accident :(

She took a large chunk of tail hair to remember him by. Other than bracelets, what else can she do with it?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thank you x

there are several places that do jewellery from tail hair other than a bracelet , there are some that set some hairs in resin to make pendants and other decorative items , also rings and keyrings

I bought a silver necklace with a lovely bright resin pendant, which has my horses tail hair inside, and her name engraved on it. Very pleased.

I've got my boy's in a plait and I think that is how it will stay. It has pride of place on my display shelf. I thought about doing something with it but don't want it to fall apart. I smell it from time to time. It still smells of him for now x

I didn't realise how much length you needed to take for a bracelet when I lost my old girl so only snipped about 8 inches of mane and tail. At the moment they are just swatches in the cupboard with her trophies, but I think I will look into the rings. However I did keep a large bag of her fur when she shed her last winter coat, from her body and her white leg. There is a jewellers quite near me that will make an artificial diamond from a sample of crem ash or fur/hair and so I'm saving up to do that. It only needs a little bit and isn't as wildly expensive as you might think. I did try smelling the fur/tail swatches but they lost her lovely smell very rapidly. That is the bit I miss the most about her :(

I have my old boys tail made into a bracelet but my friend had hers made into a diamond ring :D

I get asked so many times ohh where did you get that from? They seem quite shocked when I tell them where (or who) it was from :p

I still haven't dared to get Rodney's out, still way too raw. There are some fantastic companies on Facebook though. Main types seem to be standard braided hair bracelets / necklaces / pendants, or the same encased in resin. There was one company doing rings for around £25 which I planned on ordering.

Just still can't bring myself to open that box - my eyes are welling up just thinking about it :o

It does get better with time I promise you ... I wear my bracelet everyday as had the links done in silver - feels like he's still with me each day :o

My arab that was his best friend was sniffing it the other week and snorting which shes never done before (or done since) - it was completely a one off coinsidence but still made me smile as in my head I told myself she knew it was him :) x

I wish I'd taken a larger piece of Misty's mane (or any of her tail), unfortunately I wasn't really thinking at the time and just took a small chunk, don't think there's enough to make into anything. It sits on my chest of drawers at home along with two teeth!

Glad to hear I'm not the only weirdo who kept some teeth! She used to leave them in her feed bucket for me. I didn't know what the going rate for horse molars was from the tooth fairy so used to give her some extra (organic) carrots. I have a tooth from her little best buddy who passed 4 years before too.

Another vote for shpangle...i'm waiting for a pendant and a keyring to arrive and the guy is very open letting you design your own stuff. I only took a chunk of my boy's mane and he only needed a small bit to do both. I chose a criss cross mane hair pendant and then a keyring with more mane, his name on and asked for a piece of horseshoe confetti in the background. Looking forward to getting them :-)
