Apparently they don't just plait any more, their new tactic (according to what I just read online) is to remove horses shoes while they're in the field so they know which one to take.

Is this another one to chalk up as a myth or has anyone's sisters friends dogs long lost cousin had this happen to them?

Yep. According to new technology, sorry, I mean torches. They're now shining at horses hooves, to identify if it's got all its shoes. Nans, grans, uncle, cousins nephew told me, it's bound to strike near you! Keep an eye out and be careful!
:p

:eek::eek: thats 3 eeks for the 3 ponies i have that now have no shoes on!!!!

hang on.....they didnt ever have shoes on does that mean thieves have been waiting all this time to steal them??? :D:rolleyes:

Its along the lines of when somebody told me, watch your rugs, theives are putting tears in rugs only small ones so you dont notice!!!! I replied, sarcsticly 'how do they know the difference between one theyve done and one thats been ripped on a fence!?' they said oh they just do!!LOL :D

A lot of people are posting today on Facebook about plaits in their horses manes this morning. The fact it was gale force winds last night completely passed them by.

Another one I've seen recently are stables apparently being marked with red crosses.

Actually come to think of it my daughter section A came in with twists in his mane!!! Oh no better go there quick!!!;). bit of showsheen will have hopefully confused them!! hehe:D

So that's why my horse, who has typical strong cob feet and hasn't lost a shoe in the 10 years I've had her, lost the same shoe twice in the space of 2 weeks! Thankfully she induced her own injury to be box rested before they could take her. (No good with smilies, please read that with the sarcastic tone meant!)

We had a tack marking session at our yard last year and were all automaticaly signed up for text and email updates through the horsewatch scheme. Had one from them today to say that a pony had been "tagged" with a plait in it's mane, and red paint sprayed on it's front legs and neck, so if there's no shoes to be removed, beware for paint!

And nail polish from what I've just read, I hear they prefer to use Maybelline Fast Dry. I'll try to find out the shade with upmost importance. Don't blame them, spray paint is just amateur.:D

I cant get near my lot with a purple spray can unless they are caught and stabled and cornered!! :D
if someone wants to try and spray them red in the field then its clearly monty roberts coz no other person can get near them!!!!:D;)

Please do find out...if my ponies are getting pinched then i want a proffesional set up to be doing it? not some part timer! ;)

Apparently some ponies near us have had their hoods taken down, a section of their manes cut out, then having their hoods put back up...

So why cover your tag??

I think in this case either the hoods have rubbed, or it's some strange person who needs horse hair for a magic spell or something...

My horse came in yesterday with a shoe missing. I thought she had pulled it off herself in all the soft, squelchy mud we've got................

I'd better go and check she's still iun the field!

Actually you've all got it wrong; the lastest mark thieves are using is a small patch of mud over the left eye. ;)
My horse has been marked like this three times in a row so they're definitely trying to steal him, but I foil them each time by brushing it out, clever, eh? :p

Fany is unshod at present, but I would have loved to see a thief try to pick up her feet, if she doesn't feel like picking them up they stay down! Still there would be no quick getaway. As for Cappy, well he loves our farrier but anyone else may well end up as the first horse thief in space :D

Latest up here is mud on the polls, Cappy is regularly marked like that, and damned if I can work out how he does it so thoroughly. That said if it is thieves they would have to be 7ft at least, 'cos that is how tall Cappy is when he has his head in the air!

You need to move him to another part of the country, ASAP!

I can't believe they're now using mud, how clever of you to think to brush it off!

You're laughing but I'm having to convince my mum that someone isn't coming in the field every night and plaiting Lilys mane! She's even taken to plaiting it herself first!

I've told her that any horse thief worth his salt would take one look at Lils arthritic knees and know she wasn't worth nicking anyway! ....(touch wood!)

sounds like they are witches looking for magic potion ingredients hee hee spooky

Just got back from the field, I think there are about 6 thieves after my horse. I didn't know you could get so many plaits in one, fine, mane.

Ahhh you're one step ahead of the game, keep them all unshod and it will confuse them! :D

My two are unshod too lmao All a load of cods wallop

I have received 3 phone calls this week from owners worried because their horses have plaits, someone is having a laugh, i have heard about removing the shoes aswell, if they want to nick your horse they will take it not mess about doing stuff to draw attention!

the funny thing is - Most of these people making these stories would see a horsebox in the middle of a field in the dark and think - Oh they must be good ponies to load in the dark and not look a little closer (at a safe distance of course - im not saying walk towards them saying 'oh hello, i wonder dear fellow, what is it your up to')

I heard Mud INSIDE the ears was the trick - My horse wont let me brush it out - she doesnt love me anymore and wants to leave!
