horse thieves caught in act??? should i report to police?

and breathe

Yes I do read the stolen part of the forum, together with the posts by the sensible people, including those involved with the police force who state that there has never been a theft following plaiting of the force.

What I found so amusing was that someone was suggesting that people who steal horses are spreading rumours that plaiting doesn't happen because they want people not to worry about it. Just go back to the stolen forum and look at the relative newness of those panicking about plaits, and then check the posting history - ie content of posts - of those saying not to get so het up its only a rumour spread by hysterical idiots. Note that those posters tend to be pretty sensible.

But I'll say to you as I've said to so many others, I have five horses turned out together. Three are valuable and have short pulled manes and tails, only one of them is freezemarked. None of the valuable horses has ever been plaited. They are all friendly and will come over to strangers for a fuss. One of my ponies is frequently plaited - nice well-formed plaits. The problem with suggesting he might be about to be stolen is that in a field of expensive-looking horses he is the elderly ugly Welsh Cob, he's 25 now, he's also very visibly freezemarked and the one that really puts the mockers on the story you seem so much to want to believe is that he is utterly unapproachable by strangers. We can't catch him unless we take all the others out of the field, someone unknown entering the field would be unlikely to get within 20 feet of him. His quirks mean that even when you've got him at home and stabled you can't plait his mane unless you have plaited his tail first. Hell, when he's at home and got upset - like you've tried to put someoneelse's headcollar on him - you can't even catch him in a 12 x 12 stable.

So you would suggest that somewhere out there is a person who values an elderly Welsh Cob over three much more valuable horses, has got him to trust them so much that they can plait his mane and then doesn't come back and get him even though the plait might stay in for a couple of weeks - and they do it repeatedly without being seen by the people who are on 24 hour watch at a business by the access to our field.

Do your research, talk to the people who actually have to deal with stolen horses not the poor blighter on the Police desk who is rung up by yet another hysterical person reporting a wind plait and panicking and can only confirm that there are many such calls. Check back through those threads on the stolen forum.

Perhaps you could quote the crime numbers, not for horses reported plaited but for horses reported stolen after being plaited. I'll be waiting with bated breath as will others.

Ah, and happy new year, perhaps if you haven't already done it you should make your most important resolution to get your horses freeze-marked.

actually, i can believe they will try and take something old. a good friend of the family bought a 23 yr old gelding from someone a few years back before the law changed and you needed a passport. (he was micro chipped) he was sold as a 19 yr old (her fault maybe for not checking teeth ext) as a plodder and novice ride, she feel in love with him and bought him.
she had the vet out to check him over and they scanned for a chip as all vets do ( she was told he wasnt chipped) and a chip came up. her vet was a friend and ran it through the data base and turned out he had been stolen about 2 months before that from a field about 120 miles away! the vets contacted the old owner and my friend told the vets that they could have her phone number. the old owner called her and came up to her yard. they had had there fence took apart and 2 of there horses taken and all of there tack and jumps ect. my friend gave them there horse back and they gave her £300 as a thank you, which she donated to a charity. and she still calls them and goes to visit him at his owners home and she ended up buying a horse off them. so i am sorry but they do steel older horses.
they may not get near yours but they would try there damedist to.
mine is freezemarked, chipped ect. i love my filly loads.
like i have said before on this post. it doesnt matter what others think i know what i saw and it was to much of a coincidence for all that to happen in 1 night for it not to be classed as a little dodgy. thank you for your comments xx

do my research?!
my brother in law works for the police force and i can assure you this is a real thing. he has been to yards while horses are in the process of being stolen, thanks to quick reports. and he said on one call out all the horses the people ere trying to load had plaits on them. they used ropes whips and stick ect to heard them in so they didnt have to catch them and they had taken the fence apart in a way that when they had finished they would have been able to put it back up again! so no i dont need to get my facts right at all.
why would a inspector in the police lie about that? he was brought up with horses and ponies and was in the mounted police for 12 years he has seen his fair share of horse thefts, and while not all are plaited up it does truly happen

YD i wouldnt even write a response to some people that are commenting i know you probably feel you have to fight your case but tbh i really wouldnt waste my time anymore. im so glad your mare is freezemarked and so on

happy new year everyone :):):):) xxxx

i dont want to offend people. and i would like people to not get to b***hy on my thread please i know it is a subject that people have different views on but no one has to start getting rude or angry or whatever about it please. otherwise it defeats the object of the post... to air views and all that not to start an agruement xx:o:o:rolleyes:
