Hi

Viewed a 16h cloverhill line ISH mare today.

She's 8 years old. Mainly hacked and hunted however did show jump as a 4 year old. Needs schooling if going to compete etc. Was put in foal twice but both died.

She's being sold from the field however I did take her for a ride and had a nice canter and jump with her. She was easy going and just what I'm after. (Want to hack and hunt mostly).

However, she's up for just £1000. The owner says no trial as being sold from field. Being sold because he has too many horses which is why she's been off work for nearly two months.

Would you get the horse vetted as it's only £1000 and does the reason for selling the horse seem adequate?
The man selling her seemed genuine and I was able to get a good feel for the mare. She was nicely forward going but safe.
I'm not a complete novice as have had thoroughbreds and youngsters however I wouldn't say I was experienced either. I don't really have anyone I can take to see her with me either.

Personally unless you are prepared to sell on / PTS if breaks, I would have a full vetting to see if any underling problems (even ones e.g. heart murmour that the owner doesnt know about).

I would go and try her a second time, and ask if can box out to a school, and try her at strange place on surface.

Is hard as she obviously isnt fit. Hence cheap and bought out of field. Her being good to get straight on and hack alone is a good sign.

Is a risk that she had an injury at some point, causing the decision to put her in foal?

Does she have a ridden record you can look up / speak to original rider?
 
1000 is still a fair whack for minimal amount of being able to try her properly so I would probably get her vetted as it's not adding a lot to the price. She sounds nice. Hope she's as good as she seems.
 
Yes I'd always vet no matter how cheap! As if there are issues £250 is soon spent on vet bills! My friend looked at a cheap horse £1500 looked fab everyone said she was wasting her money vetting it as it seemed great folk knew the owner etc. the owner had a fab story why selling. I sat my friend down and insisted she vetted just in case ! Horse failed vetting I heard a month later it ha been sold on and was on box rest with new owners with issues related to why it failed vetting for my friend! So £250 well spent ... The vet bills on it would have been massive!
 
Have you asked if they are open to a vetting

Many people sell from the field as a way if getting a quick straightforward sale so aren't always open to delays and complications from vettings

To me a cheap sale from the field is just that and having your cake and eating it isn't always an option
