Starting my Christmas shopping.. first time buying for horses this year. What toys do people like? These are for never stabled horses.

one of ours has a regular supply of dog toys because he loves picking things up and shaking them around his head! Loves them.

the others are more happy wiht a cardboard box with treats in the bottom and "obstacles" (just a load of brushes etc) to move around to get the treats.

One of them likes destroying things though, so he might get a few boxes inside one another, like pass the parcel, with treats in differnet bits. then he can squash them, stand on them, kick them around etc.

Space hoppers, ash, willow and other assorted branches, the 'bum scratcher deluxe' (a big fencing pole with tyres threaded on it) and assault courses that they can do with me seem to go down well with my lot.

Some great ideas, thanks! What do they do with the branches?? Stupid question I'm sure. Don't think we have willows in Perth. Was thinking of those balls you fill with treats or hay and they push around, but some much more inventive ideas here!

They will happily spend hours nibbling the little twigs and chewing the bark off the branches. Sometimes they'll pull them around a bit too, but mostly it's giving them an outlet for their natural browsing. Willow seems to be their favourite. It's nutritious, and contains a little salicylic acid (aspirin).

Those balls should be banned. The one next door to me gets given it at half 6 as the owner leaves. It then bangs the crap out of the door and batters it up the walls on a bare floor the noise is deafening. Owners should be made to stay and listen to the racket. ! Drives me mental.

This made me laugh! My horse has one and loves it (my pony is not intetested at sll!) but I am constantly having to rescue it from weird places it's been thrown and my horse scrapes it around on the concrete yard, it is pretty annoying ?

My mare had one and rolled it everywhere but failed to realise that treats fell out of it. The donkey knew that treats fell out and he followed the mare all over the fields.

That would be insanely annoying! Mine are not stabled so should be ok

Hear hear!! I used to be on a yard where the indoor school and stables were in one building. Owner would give horse a treat ball and then beggar off home, leaving horse banging h£ll out of the ball making the most deafening racket, scaring the bejeesus out of any horse trying to work in the school. I agree, owners should be locked in the stable with the horse and treat ball.

Mine happily snatch at some weeping willows we pass, so yes, both weeping and 'goat' willow are fine.

Many years ago my 3 year old mare liked to push the rattley ball around...while my elderly childhood pony hoovered up the treats that dropped out.

I keep thinking I’d like to teach my horse to play with a yoga type ball - there are YouTube videos showing you how

Maybe stay away from unnecessary plastic tat? Twigs sound good or just buy something you need like a numnah or headcollar etc. Horses fortunately don't have a concept of Christmas or birthdays . I do admit I had one of those treat ball once, waste of money as she worked out how to get treats out in 10 minutes lol and they are incredibly annoying, maybe pick one up second hand to at least avoid new plastic.

I love the idea of willow branches and a butt scratcher. Catch my pony trying to scratch on all sorts so I think he would really appreciate that!
