I was wondering if anyone who has been trying to trace a horse could suggest ways forward when the usual channels have proved to be unsuccessful.

I have contacted Farmkey but the owner details haven't been updated and have looked on the NED website but nothing came up. I know all horses should be passported, but the horse I'm trying to trace was sold 8-9 years ago; before passporting came in to play.

I'm really at a dead end so thought perhaps someone on here who's also tracing might be able to suggest other avenues to investigate.

Thanks!
:)

i'm having excactly the same problem, (posted a few wks ago) my boy has a ped id passport issued to duckhurst farm in kent in 2006...i know where he has been since then but nothing prior to that..i had him scanned for a microchip which showed that he has a weatherbys microchip, spoke to them but he was never registered with them. Contacted duckhurst & they said he was one of the horses they imported from ireland but no real history on him..it's so annoying!!!

GB: Have you tried Weatherbys Ireland as well as it sounds as if he might have just been registered as a foal with them. If so, they should be able to give you the breeding at least and might be able to pass on a letter from you to the breeders as they won't be able to give you the breeder's details themselves. Got to be worth a try.

Funnily enough, I emailed them this morning so just awaiting a reply.. I did originally ring both the Irish & English offices when I first got him a year ago but to be honest I think wires got crossed so have emailed them a nice clear email earlier today.. I thought that for a foal to get a Weatherbys passport they had to get a weatherbys microchip & be blood tested..so surely someone somewhere must have a record of him & a passport as he has the microchip? The way the person explained it was that he'd been microchipped but then never registered but surely they don't just give out microchips & not take note of the number that they have given an animal?? Surely someone must know my horse?? I have the feeling that he hasn't had the best start in life just from his scars & the fact that when I first got him he was petrified of crops, schooling whips, broom handles anything really but surely for someone to have him weatherbys microchipped the person who bred him had the intention of training him to race?? A year on and I have a right cheeky git!! lol

so if this is the case with my boy is that the end of the road & no way to find out who he is?? Or is it then a case of them blood testing??

If he's been microchipped and you have that number then they should be able to trace it and marry it up with sire and dam plus breeder. Weatherbys have everything on record unlike many ID only PIOs. Failing that, a DNA test should do the trick, they should be able to help you from that.
A mare I have originally went with the wrong sketch in her passport (she's bay, little white, passport said chestnut with socks and blaze!) but her chip number was in the right passport. She was re-sketched and DNAd and they were able to tell the owner she was who it said she was, just the wrong sketch had been used which is quite easy to do if the vet isn't organised and the owner doesn't check the passport properly when it comes back from the office which is what happened this time; I think the breeder got a rap across the knuckles for it.
Good luck, let us know how you get on, I've always found the Irish offices are most glad to help you, same as Weatherbys do here.

thanks so much for your help..will keep you updated with the response..feeling excited now..I'll probably found out that he's no-one & actually stolen..lol eeekk.. actually lets not think about that..
