Horse trailer accessories

Thx to responses to previous post on trailer manufacturers and recommendations. Further guidance on the following welcome:

1. anti-snaking devices - are these accesories or manufacturer fit/spec? Are they worth it (will be driving mostly on pot holed country roads)
2. can you get "parking motors" - like you can for caravans?
4. trailer cameras - pricey but worth it?
5. anything generally recommended getting to make life easier?

I have none of the things mentuioned in your post - I do have a 511 with big window so can mostly see what they are up to.

The only accessories I have are - portaloo & big box from tesco for boots, bridles, grooming tray etc oh yeah and a water container!

I manage just fine- would love a lorry with all your l isted mods but aint gonna hapen anytime soon!

I understand you can get all of those things .

I have a trailer cam and mirror (for horse) fitted in my trailer.

I do not have a reversing camera as i would be concerned about where to fit it to the rear of the trailer. I discussed these accessories with a trailer dealer, and they mentioned they had been on a training day with Hants fire service on rescuing horses from trailers. bearing in mind that a horse may need to be pulled out of a trailer by ropes, the last thing you need is a camera mounting fixed somewhere on the rear of the trailer.

anti snaking devices are a matter of choice. it all depends on the brand of trailer and where you are going to tow ie country lanes or motorway.

i tow a bockmann trailer which is very aerodynamic and i was told by my trailer instructor that it was particularly smooth to tow .therefore i have not fitted an antisnaking device.

the only things i think all trailers drivers should carry are a tool to release the breech bars if needed and a wheel repair ramp.

the trailer has a built in tack room, so i can pile all manner of clutter in there

re the parking motors-

be very careful on this front. i had a nosey at some caravan forums to see what people had to say and was very concerned about the type that attatch to the chassis. for starters they weigh around 40kg - not good if you are tring to keep weight down.

some posters were saying that the motors or their mounting holes were causinf chassis damage. not good in a caravan - horrific for a horse trailer. i bought one of the movers than manouvers the trailer/caravan by its hitch. obviously, i do not know if the damage allegationa are accurate.

hopefully you are aware that you should not have any loose kit, ie grooming kit, buckets, water containers etc in the trailer witha the horse. should you be unfortunate enough to be in an accident, these items turn into dobbin missiles.

I've been told by our trailer place that anti-snaking devices are not designed for horse trailers and make them a lot worse. Horse trailers are very different from caravans and other trailers as they are designed to carry live animals.
I've got an old Richardson and it's always towed very smoothly.
I would quite like a trailer cam but not a reversing cam as that would just confuse me all the more I think.

Ooo - i came across a GENIOUS invetion - google 'solo equestrian' they're called 'hitchin sticks' or something, and basically you attach one to the tow bar and one to the trailer and they help you to hitch up when you're on your own...i havent bought them yet but i probably will, along with their other product which elps loads horses that shoot out the back of the trailer before you have time to do up the breach bar!

I just have a reversing mirror on the trailer so I can see the hitch when I'm backing up to it. The other bits and pieces are just designed to separate us from us money. Somehow we all survived without them in the 'old' days! Drive sensibly and you won't need them.

Just had a very quick look at the hitchin rods and they're quite a good idea, but strikes me you could buy a kids bow and arrow set for a few quid and take the suckers off the bows, bob them on some garden bamboo sticks (which cost pennies) with some brighly coloured tape at the top or paint then and daadaa

homemade hitchin rods! A lot less than £19 (and P&P not doubt too!)

I have a small bit of electrical tape stuck to the front of my trailer, which I line up with the hinge on the spare wheel on the car...bingo, perfect alignment every time.

I also have a 140 litre wheelie bin, which takes all the miscellaneous gubbins, like jack, first aid kit, travel rug, boots, body protector etc. Saddle et all is kept in the car, so it's just the stuff I need when I am going somewhere.
