Hello,

I am now the proud owner of a little Bateson ascot first time trailer owner. Can I ask what is the best camera to get to keep an eye on his lordship while travelling and also do you cover your trailers?

It will be kept outside but untill now has been barn kept and is only 4 years old. Do covers actually work and will I be able to put it on myself as I do most things on my own.

Thanks very much :)

I had an equiview and managed to wire it into the numberplate light myself, worked well

I think they might do a wireless version now.

Trailer covers are a faff. If you only do dimmer shows and it'll be parked up all winter then it'd be worthwhile but otherwise just a pain.

I don’t think it’s legal to be able to see your horse while driving? Unless you‘re the passenger of course.

I’ve just seen a trailer cover for sale - only used twice which says it all! I asked about one when I bought my trailer from a dealer and was told they weren’t a good idea (no air to dry it out if damp)

I have an Equiview which is great but as ASMP has said, you have to have it tilted towards the passenger as illegal to have it so you can view whilst driving.
Covers, same as others have said, a complete faff plus if any damp gets under it, it gets trapped & can cause issues with softening panels etc

Covers aren't great if the trailer is stored outside as it will get damp and sweat underneath. They're really suited as dust covers when barn stored.
Park it ideally on hard standing and away from walls and lift it up at an angle so water getting in will drain out ,.plus no water will sit on the roof.
I have my back top doors shut but have left my sliding front windows a bit open for ventilation.

This camera is really easy to use ,.one charge lasts about 6 hours or so. I also use it to help me hitch up on my own. Then just pop it in the trailer once I'm hitched up.
I have my phone screen shared so that one half is Google maps , the other is the camera.

I haven’t got a camera so can’t comment there but do use a cover. Our trailer is kept under cover in the end of the hay barn and it helps to keep it clean plus it disguises what it actually is from the distant footpath. I wouldn’t be able to take it off or put it back on without help, it’s a complete faff. We should have it down to a fine art by now but still get in a muddle and it requires me clambering up the rails on the side of the barn and the other person climbing a ladder!

Ditto in horseboxes, if only a driver and no passengers you have to have it so you cannot see the screen while driving, you have to pull up and stop and then you are allowed to look at the screen while the vehicle is stationary.

I have a Bateson Ascot too, love them - its the only brand Ive ever had. I cant comment on camera as I dont have one. But I have never covered my one, it lives outside. I just wash it nown and again to get rid of the mildew and only bits which now look a bit yucky are the white grouting type stuff which goes along the joins of the mud guards to the trailer body (and doors) etc. Theyve discoloured and gone browny coloured despite trying to bleach them etc. So Ive bought dark grey bathroom grout and will be redoing it with that. The grey mudguard bits have also faded a bit. But my trailers probably 10 years old and feel it looks pretty good for its age. I personally couldnt faff with a cover as surely its got to be bone dry before you put it on ideally and I cant imagine the faff of putting one on. I guess it depends how often you use it though.

Its bad enough putting a cover on a garden swing let alone a trailer. A right nightmare.
