Hi,

I'm really hoping someone can help me.

I bought a very ol used horse trailer a year ago. It was in a bit of a sorry state so i have completely refurbished it.

The problem i now have is that the trailer doesn't seem to have a serial, vin/chassis number. I have searched the trailer high and low for a plate or stamp and there is nothing.

Stupidly when i bought it i wasn't very clued up on trailers, which i'm kicking myself for now!!! I believe that it is a Bahill pony trailer but i also think that i have no way of contacting Bahill as they are no longer in business.

So big question is how do i find out what the details/numbers are on my trailer. I have read up that in the states you can register a trailer as homemade to then get plates made up but is this something that can also be done in the UK and if so who do i contact.

I'm really stuck as i believe it is illegal to use the trailer without these details.

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME : (

Thanks

Bahill went out of business many years ago so getting info now is impossible

Trailers without plates use the total of the TYRE LOAD RATINGS to determine the MAM.
A rating of 66 on 4 tyres would give a MAM of 1200 kgs.

You cannot make up your own plate for it - well, you could but it has no legal standing

Only trailers over 3500 kgs come under regulations which require them to be registered and be plated - they also have to have air brakes or similar as an independant braking system

This is why trailers towed by B category vehicles are 3500 kgs or under

Those with tyre load ratings which add up to more than 3500 will be classed as being 3500 max

Why would you want to insure an old trailer? Thieves will nick the new Ifor parked next door.

Is trailer insurance only to cover for theft then or does it not cover for using it on the road.

Sorry trailer insurance is all new to me - I thought it was the same principle as insuring a car.

Why You Need Horse Trailer Insurance

Insuring A Horse Trailer

Many horse enthusiasts do not realise they need horse trailer insurance. Regular car insurance doesn’t protect horse trailers or the horses riding in them. One would think that their equine employees and family members would be covered in the same way as any other human being, but horses and their trailers are not normally covered. In order to be insured against loss one must buy horse trailer insurance separately.
