OK, so I'm in a rather frustrating process of buying a lightweight horse trailer (sorry for the long story I'm near wits end).

After the electrics didn't work on the first trailer I put a deposit on, I started my search again.

I viewed an absolutely lovely ifor Williams single trailer in mint condition. It was 2008, so 5 years old and looked like it was brand new. Sadly someone else had first offer on it and it sold for £1800.

I then viewed another (same make), but 14 years old for £2200. When I got there it was rusty, hadn't been serviced and needed new tyres. She did offer to come down to £1850 but I was put off by age, rust and from the previous lovely trailer at the same price.

I've just been offered another 2 trailers (all single ifors), one 14 years old (looks ok, just had new tyres and a service) for £2450 and another 5 year old one (does look brand new) for £2950.

I get that they may come with some additional added extras but the prices are varying so much I'm confused what is a ridiculous price and what I should be looking at. I can't afford a brand new one at £3850 upwards but can someone advise what is sensible?

I would say that for a budget of £1800 to £2000 you should get a smart trailer of say 8 years old. I have known of 2 immaculate big Ifor doubles going for that price range in the last 8 months. What region are you in?>

Does it have to be a IW. You could get a light weight Rice Europa in good condition well within budget, take the partition out and travel one if you are worried about weight. There are far more of them to choose from.

Ifor Williams trailers hold their value very well, so even the older ones are still sold for a decent price.

A lot depends on whether they have an aluminium floor or wooden - the older ones with wooden floors sell pretty cheaply, and for a single £1800 sounds about right. Personally, I would never touch one with a wooden floor though. Ones with aluminium floors tend to be approx £500-£600 more in price.

I agree regarding the wooden floor.

What do you think £1800 sounds like a good price for? age wise?

I would have happily bought the first trailer which was at that price if it wasn't for the other person getting first refusal. I'm just loathing paying £1450 for something which is 14 years old when I compare it to the one which was 5 years old, in new condition and selling for £650 less. :s I'm just confused on the rough prices when they seem to vary so drastically. :/

It doesn't have to be an Ifor. The initial trailer was a Bateson Derby. I just liked the looks of the single Ifors. They seem more sturdy.

we recently bought a trailer it is a rice europa but it was very cheap because it is bright pink I love it for the fact it is highly unlikely to be stolen. Does make people smile though and the granddaughters love it

I have a Bateson Derby and think its fab! I bought it as it is very lightweight. It tows like a dream, so easy and because it is low to the ground it actually is very stable. Its also light and airy inside. I generally tow either 2 x Sec A's or a Sec A and and a Sec D. It is quite short so wouldn't recommend any horse thats quite long or above 15.2. I paid £1150.

I guess it's supply and demand, not many singles about but plenty of 505s to choose from which bumps up the price of the singles a bit more if buying second hand

I need it to be 750kg or lighter ;/

The older single Ifors (HB 401)are 770kg. One with a wooden floor will be heavier.

The 2008 one you saw for £1800 was an absolute bargain (unless there was something wrong with it), so don't use that as a comparison against anything else - you'll be very lucky to get one of that age for less than 2.5k.

They're worth every penny though :)
