This year my service doubled on my IW!! I'm quite shocked even with new brakes.

How much did you pay?

£135 for a full service (Bateson Ascot) plus a little extra for some parts that were replaced to take it up to £165 (incl. VAT)

I use a very reliable, very good mobile servicing man. A basic service is £80 inc VAT (or was last August when I had it done last). If it needs any more work, he'll tell you first what needs doing and explains why gives you a price and won't deviate from it and leaves all the old parts for you to see that he's done it.

I'd happily recommend him to others in South Wales if anybody needs their trailer servicing.

Wow, those prices are extortionate. Full 35 point service £95 all in.
Parts:
Full axle brake set (shoes and springs) shouldn't be more than £50 per axle
Bearings £25 per drum (unusual for them to wear out)
Brake cables £12 each
Naughty when companies take advantage!

£50 by a mobile guy who came to my house. It was all fine so that was just labour and no parts required.

I suggest that there is not a lot of work in routine servicing of a trailer. Thus the initial price quote is for inspection of entire unit and that minimal routine service work. You pay for that.
The inspection will throw up items suffering from wear and tear and damage; the state of the trailer will depend on the mileage since last inspection and also how carefully the trailer is used. You should be informed the nature of the work required and the cost, then make the decision to authorise rectification, or not.
No need for nasty surprises.

Depends on mechanic - other half does some trailers and they get a comprehensive job done on a service. He's still working or I'd get the details!

Servicing a Horse Trailer shouldn't bee any more than £100, no matter where you are in the country. A trailer is a very simple & basic piece of engineering. There is very little to be done & any mechanic should know how to do it. There's nothing complicated, anyone with a basic knowledge of 'Meccano' should find it a breeze. :)
