HELP>.......Im looking to buy our first trailer but looking at adverts is just too confusing would appreciate any feed back on anyones experiences or preferences
What size and number of horses are you wanting to transport? The ifor williams are always very good but try to get one with an alloy floor, the richardsons have always been good too.
I prefer our Bateson Ascot over Ifors. Have had an Ifor to play with for about 3 months now and do like it but still like my own Bateson more
It's really light to tow, takes 2 16.2hh's easily, removable rubber matting (easier to take out that the Ifors which doesnt seem to be designed for removing easily!) and the built-in tack box at the front is brilliant. It also has an aluminium floor which as above says, is important. Other good thing is with Batesons - if you have any issues / problems, the Bateson people are really really helpful and polite! They have sent us clips for free in the past and helped source parts that needed replacing eventually etc.
Another vote for Bateson- I have the Deauville and when it's time comes will get another.
My horse, who used to take a wee bit of persuading loading in an Ifor, loads himself onto the Bateson. It's far brighter and airier than the IW inside- and has more head room, all of which he appreciates, I think.
Just sold my ifor and now on the lookout for something else. We have had 3 ifors over the years and the quality has got worse as they got newer! The very new ones are supposed to be awful.
When I got my richardson I look at an ifor at the same place and the quality of the news ones is not brilliant. I went for the richardson because of the guarantee on the floor, the fact that the front ramp opens onto the kerb side not the road and it was actually bigger inside. Its brighter and one of the horses wouldn't travel in a lorry walks straight in and just loves travelling in it.
With regards to trailers I looked extensively at ifor williams (brand new and used) and Wessex.
With the ifor williams the new model it looked like a robinsons trailer - it looked awful so ditched that very quickly.
Then there was the used model, very popular and was convinced this was going to be the one... until I saw what it was made of. The sides are thin wood with a plastic coating, the central patition shocked me the most it is two thin parts of wood with polystyrene in the middle!!!!!!! No joke! I only know this as a dealer let me see the inside of one where a horse had got his feet over the front bar. It had torn the patition apart (two bits of wood had come apart) and ripped the fixing of the breast bar from the side wall - hence how I could see the wood and how thin it was. It could never have stood any amount of pressure let alone a horse on top! I was very shocked and it put me right off, I mean polystyrene in a central partition is crazy!!
So then I looked at a wessex and I fell in love! Gas ramps - so very light and no exponsed springs for the horse to get his foot caught in. The raps are also very shallow. Aluminium body so light but strong and rot proof. Padded sides and partitions, the central partition is galvanised steel, so very durable and centrally hinges so opens nice and wide for loading. Very light and airy inside too, even I'd travel in there!
I am very pleased with my purchase, and think I made an informed decision, so I hope my boring research helps!
Another vote for Batesons from me - the horses just step in quite happily without the small ramp down and it stays lovely and cool inside when in the sun.
