Can anyone give me some advice on buying a 3.5 ton van conversion. Do horses travel well in these? I have two 16.1HH TBs - would it be suitable or would I be better off with a trailer?

Many thanks in advance!:)

One horse ok but two is likely to make it overloaded on weight

Many state high payloads but after taking to weighbridge to find empty weight they are usually found to be inaccurate

Also the payload is not just for the load but for the people fuel tack etc etc

For 2 horses in a trailer you will be a B+E on your driving licence to tow alone or under L plate rules with an appropriate supervising driver

See posts 999 and 1000 in the TOWING CLINIC link below in my signature

You would prob be ok with the 2 in there but payload is usually max 1250 on good conversions so you may struggle to get any fuel in tank or a driver in let alone gear and a passenger, you can apparently get them uprated to higher tonnage quite reasonably but u would then need licence to drive it and I think plating..rog?

Saying that love my van (pics in album) it is Sooo easy to drive and uses v little fuel, I have taken 2 but not biggies and have taken everything else out I store in there (drives well even loaded almost up to limit) make sure check the conversion, got mine done myself and saw each stage of it.

A 3.5 can be uprated in many cases but any vehicle between 3.5 and 7.5 GVW requires a LGV C1 licence

Uprating may require some physical changes but not always because many are built at around 4 tonnes but plated at 3.5 so those with a car licence (B) can drive them
