I'm 20, have had my normal driving license for a year. I currently just have a cheap little Seat Ibiza.

Is there a cheap car (bearing in mind a young persons insurance) that would be powerful enough to legally tow a trailer? Someone mentioned a Mondeo to me?
And obviously, I would do my trailer test.

Or should I buy a horsebox (are they easier or harder to drive?) And what test would I need to do?

Any ideas appreciated?

You're in the same situation as me. Even down to the ibiza. I have been told it is possible to tow with normal saloons as long as you get the lightest of light single horse trailer and you don't have a fatty.

My solution has been to recieve a Ford Scorpio as a gift from my in laws and I booked my trailer test today. Insurance not cheap on it but better than a disco and it'll tow a fair weight as it is ginourmious and weighs a tonne. (it's an ugly creature though)

I definitely think it's cheaper to run a big car than even a little lorry! Any chance of getting something like a four trac and keeping your Ibiza so you don't have to use all that fuel to go to the supermarket?

Driving a lorry seems much nicer than towing though mind you.. Sorry not much help but wanted to sympathise with the rubbish choices of young drivers!

not sure about cars as not old enough to drive but i you wan to drive a lorry you have to pass a HGV test and you must be 21

A lot of it depends on what your normal mileage is without taking the horse anywhere. Personally I couldn't run a 4x4 as I do about 2000 miles per month as I have to use my car for my job, so it would cost me a fortune. So I have a little 3.5t lorry - downside is that weightwise, I would probably be over the weight limit carrying two horses, so I only ever take one anywhere at any time....you don't need to take any test for a 3.5t.
