Horse Transport - Yorkshire to Newmarket

How much would professional transport cost for taking a horse from Yorkshire down to Newmarket be approximately? or would it be cheaper to hire a self-drive box?

Feel free recomend companies too.

I have always used boothroyden transport, they have been reasonable and horses have always re-loaded well after travelling with them, which I take as a sign nothing bad happens to them while with them.

As a guide, Scotland to S Wales on a shared load was about £275.00
 
Give Gillies a ring ... They are up and down this route all week. You'd be able to share a load. I used them 10 years ago for my Shetland, but he was at the end if a huge wagon full of racehorses so not sure what theyd charge now.
When my parents moved back to Yorkshire from Essex, they got a local person to drive and transport them... Smaller lorry, and not in the scale of Gillies

Is that Eddie Gillies?

Funny you should mention that because a huge all singing all dancing horse wagon passed me the other morning on my way to work (complete with fairy lights might I add) and I'm sure it said Eddie Giles or may of been Gillies perhaps, looked like a horse transport type wagon.

Wonder if that is the same company you mean.

Try putting your details onto www.horsetransportsearch.com and you will find quite a difference in cost and styles of travel.

Bear in mind that bigger companies may want to stable overnight after collection rather than going straight to your destination if they have already travelled a considerable distance due to tachograph regs.

There are quite a few transporters in the Yorkshire area, many of which will be connected to the search website.

I know you can hire 3.5ton new build lorries from Richard Alexanders at Boroughbridge... If you are happy to use one that is.
It's a very popular route for racehorses... When my shettie went South, his breeder worked in the blood stock industry and recommended a transporter - I know he went 25 miles North (funnily enough to Boroughbridge) to a racing yard before he came South. Not sure I'd do that again as I'd want any horse if mine to go direct.
I know the wagon and driver my mum hired to bring the horses up was much cheaper as she had two to travel

I've contacted a EGillies as the collect from Yorkshire on Mondays, quoted 150 plus VAT, so talking 180 for a one way trip which is about 170 miles give or take, Im no expert but for proffessional transportation I think that's pretty reasonable considering if I took a self drive and had to fuel up as well?

One thing that doesn't appeal to me is that it would be shared load, good in one way as there is company on board but I wouldn't want them unloading and loading the horse if their dropping others off, plus I wouldn't be able to travel down with the horse, would need to go separately.

Perhaps trailer hire maybe another option which will solve the above concerns.

I too have used Adam a lot and would happily recommend him to others - in fact he's taking a weanling from our stud next down to East Anglia.

Have also had clients use Gillies - we had 2 going to Scotland and again they are very professional, quiet with youngster that had never loaded before.
