I am currently conducting some research into the use of horse transporters: How many of you have used them, for what purpose and what you liked and disliked and what sort of cost you incurred?
Would appreciate any comments

hi have used two different transporters before i got my own transport. mainly to go to shows to do a (4x4 and trailer) 40 mile trip and stay with me (they drive) was about £60 i didn't mind as the people are realy nice and helped me tack up and so on well worth it anyone want someone who transports in north wales area M & L horse transport are your people !!!

we have used them to transport the pony club ponies over to the champs in england, although one of pc mothers is owner of well known stud farm and regulary transports mares or stallions over to england, so we got the free use of that.

have had to use them in an emergency situation; lorry broke down last year on the M26 in england(!!) horses transported to novice pc champs in chesire by the other pony clubbers that were at the novice champs, horses then had to trave; home on a transporter.

there is only one commercial horse transporter i would use here, as the other person does not stop in bad weather etc. the good person doesnt give them enough room to muck about and never travels in boots as he has had some awful experiences with the other horses standing on anothers boots.
not sure about cost though!

I used Julie Magnus when I bought Ella. Ella was 160 miles away and I wanted to use a reputable transporter to collect her for me. Julie Magnus was brillliant - she supplied all her licensing ref. nos and also insisted that Ella's passport travel with her (no problem as I bought her from reputable people). She kept me updated during the journey and when Ella arrived, she had obviously travelled extremely well. The charge was £320, which I thought was extremely fair - Julie Magnus is based in Newmarket and I am in Suffolk, so it was a 320 mile round trip. If I had to move my lot over a long distance, I would definitely use her again.

Yesterday we used Philip Hirst who owns Skye Horse Transport.......we have used him before and he is absolutely brilliant, luxury travel.
It cost £120 + vat from Midlands down to Swindon. And its always nice to know that the driver has experiance with horses, Philip has represented GB in Endurance, as does his Mum and his sister is a vet. I cant recommend him highly enough.

Thanks everyone - I am in the process of setting up in horse transport and I am grateful for those who have replied so far. I have horses of my own and I know what works for me so it's interesting to hear what works well and what doesn't for any prospective customers.

we have used a number of transporters over the past few years including eric Gillie, monarch transport, rupert worrell all have been reliable on time and reasonably priced and the horses are well cared for

I have used a few transporters, generally with very good results. If I was setting up a business one thing I would be careful of is the type of box I purchased and the way the horses travel. Many people I know (including myself) will not travel their horses herringbone and will only use front or back facing lorries. Many big horses can't stand with their neck and back in a natural position if they are squashed in sideways and one transporter told me he has seen horses with back injuries caused when travelling herringbone & the box had to brake sharply. Try travelling on the tube and see how uncomfortable it is trying to stand at an angle as opposed to leaning your bum against someting solid.

I used Eric Gillie to transport my horse from Scotland to Berkshire when I moved down here a couple of years ago. I was so pleased with the service they provided, he was picked up and taken to their base in Kelso overnight and then started the long journey. He arrived a day late as the driver had my boy and another who was going further south and he didnt want to deliver my chap and leave have this other horse by itself at their overnight stables. I thought that was excellent, as I wouldnt have liked my boy to be by himself. He arrived in style and I got a huge whinny when he spotted me waiting for him

He came off the lorry looking like he had just come 10 miles rather than several hundred! Cant remember exact cost, prob in region of £300? VERY pleased with their service and would use them again!
