So I've just paid the deposit on a 4 month old colt. He'll be coming down to me in spring, and I'm trying to think of ways to interest him/ occupy his mind as he'll be starting to get inquisitive and curious. I pitched the idea to a friend of putting his feed in a horse treat ball rather than just in a bucket, however she doesn't really like the treat balls, having the opinion that they irritate rather than occupy. I was hoping people could give me their opinions on this idea please :)

I've only used a nut ball when my horse is stabled. I'm guessing with your new horse being a youngster, he'll be out with other young horses ? If so, I imagine it would make it hard as I imagine it would roll through field fencing!

My horse seems to love his ball and doesn't seem to find it annoying in his stable.

I'm hoping he'll be able to go out with other youngsters, I literally paid for him the other day, so I haven't looked at livery yards yet. I was thinking of bringing him in for a feed anyway, to get him familiar with a being in a stable.

Let him be, he won't need treat balls. They have their uses, box resting etc, but a 10 month old foal will be busy enough grazing, playing and sleeping.

Doesn't irritate my horse, he loves his treat ball and would often leave his feed in favour for his ball if given at the same time.

He got used to where the holes were and new if he had the yellow top at the top the treats would fall out easier!
