hi i have a problem with my horse tripping alot when we are out riding,i have just brought a new saddle and had it fitted, but i have noticed that when i was riding her bareback she wasnt tripping, when i ride with a saddle she trips and stumbles,i was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as i have had the saddler out and she said its fine

Have the saddler out again and try some different saddles and see if it still happens. Its very possible for a saddle to seem to fit in all the important ways but still the horse doesn't like it.

Sounds like your saddle is either too narrow for your horse and putting pressure either side of the withers or the points are too long/ short and also putting pressure on the side of the withers - or - you could be putting the saddle on too far forward ( believe me 8 out of 10 people do until they know otherwise) and again too much pressure either side of the wither.

I suggest get saddler to come back and recheck. In the meantime you could try moving the saddle back a couple of inches so it is well behind the shoulder

How old is your horse Maz? A horse can trip for a thousand reasons and it may not be the saddle so much as the different way riders sit when bareback. She may be used to going on her forehand or she may be lazy or she may have a medical problem. Just an alert but an older horse that's gone on the forehand most of its life, especially a safe, laid back horse that has been used over and over for total beginners eg a trekking or riding school horse, may have bi-lateral front lameness. It can reach quite a shocking level without the owner even seeing it because BOTH feet hurt the same amount. Nerve block one foot and the result is clear. With this sort of problem though, you would have noticed your girl struggling going down hills or across uneven ground so it's just an alert.

Agree with BoF, particulrly with regard to riding style. Is it likely that she is tripping when you ride with a saddle because you are not riding her up to herself?

thanks for the advice i have been thinking my saddle has got 2 point straps, one at the front and one at the back, the saddler told me to use both of these straps,i now think that by using both of these straps that it is putting pressure on her shoulders and pressure on her back as yesterday when i rode her i felt that she was going short in the front when she walked and also arching her back, today when i took her out i only got a couple of metres up the road and she arched her back quite badly so i took her back home does anyone think these point sraps could be the problem? shes only 7
