I always take my dogs to the yard and wouldn't have it any other way.. but, my dogs go into the tea room until the horses are in their stables and then they can be let out to run around free. Again, i put the dogs away when i'm turning the horses back out. I have two little pugs and it wouldn't take a lot for an accident to be fatal, so why take the risk?
I am on a private yard though, so i can see where it could get complicated on a busy livery yard.
QR:
my horse killed my ex-YO's dog. she trod on it, and broke it's pelvis. it had to be pts.
YO tried to claim expenses from me as they hadn't bothered to get their own insurance... my insurance company basically told them to bog off... their dog shouldn't have been loose around my horse.
i can't see that your situation is any different, except that, luckily for you, your dog is still alive. i think her insurance company would also tell you to bog off...
MY dog got kicked by another liveries horse. Nearly lost an eye. Horse owner was distraught and rushed us to nearest vets.
But, you know what???
It was MY dog.
MY decision to bring her to a HORSE yard.
MY responsibility to look after her....
and MY INSURANCE that paid up.
I am really sorry that your dog got hurt and hope that it is ok. Its a horrible thing for anyone, but you took your eye off the ball and an accident happened.
My friends horse killed a working collie at the yard, it was loose running round the horses feet (big IDxTB) she tripped over him, stood on his leg broke it and within 3 days it was septic and he had blood poisoning
No one tried suing as the horse and owner were clearly not at fault. It's a shame the OP got a fair few 'sharp' replies for asking if it's possible to sue, I can understand why it might cross someone mind...they were only asking after all.
I would be annoyed if someone walked their horse right at my dog when he was quietly sitting at the yard, it's not their place to avoid the dog but if it was in the way a ploite 'shift your dog' would only take a second
Most of the yards I have been at allow dogs, I've seen a few nasty accidents and the dog generally comes off worse which is why I would never take my own down
Hope your dog makes a full and speedy recovery Disco
In all likelyhood, bringing a dog to the yard is done at the owners risk, so blame cannot be laid on any one else. As the post has been deleted I can only assume from what I have read, that you were shutting the stable door. I am fortunate enough to be able to close a stable door and shout a command to a dog at the same time.
I'm really sorry for your dog, and hope it recovers well, but feel the bill is down to you.
You dont pay the YO for livery for your dog do you?
The other lady obviously does pay livery for her horse.
You took a risk in taking the dog (and sorry but you obviously haven't paid enough mind to it) and now the dog has been injured.
If i sent my 5 yr old son to play in the road and he got hit by a car, who is to blame?
Me of course! My son, my responsibility!
Same applies to you i'm afraid, your dog, your responsibility!
The moral thing to do is maybe share the blame and the cost. Its just a preventable accident, and to say dogs and horse don't mix they seem to when out hunting. hope your dog is better soon no matter where the blame lies its the poor dog suffering.

ITS YOUR DOG, not anyone elses, sure I'll try not to hurt it but the responsibility to it is YOURS. Man up and admit you clearly werent paying enough attention and chalk it up to experience, stuff like this happens to everyone the only difference is, we get on and admit our wrongs - not try and palm them off onto others.

have to say agree with this. hope dog gets better soon

My horses and dogs live at home with me (and sister). The dogs' kennel is in the stable yard. We NEVER allow the dogs into the yard when the horses are going through, in order to avoid accidents.
OP I do hope your dog makes a good recovery.
Not got it - plus if it's someone else's fault you are always best to claim from their insurance (which is why you have insurance)

So can I ask who anyone would put a claim into if your dog accidently hurt someone elses animal? Surely thats a bit of a cheek you expect to be able to claim from someone elses insurance when you have none of your own!
Hope your dog gets better soon. I'm sure no one was to blame and this was just a nasty accident but at the same time hope lessosn can be learnt
Dog insurance is currently marginally better than horse insurance, which a lot of people seem to consider a rip off - why the obsession with having dog insurance. My dog is insured because he is an active large breed, and we couldn't afford a cruciate op if it became necessary, if he wasn't a cruciate prone breed we'd go with the self insure for vets' bills + public liability through a different route. Whether or not the dog is insured is hardly relevant to the point of the post - if your dog is insured and you have to claim on your policy for an injury caused by someone else, you might well want a contribution to the excess (often a percentage of the bill) or to claim from someone else so your insurance doesn't get more expensive...
As for claims culture, a lot of insurance forms ask about the circumstances of the injury, to see if they could claim their costs back from someone else...
So last week I was riding my horse and another liveries dog jumped at her. She freaked and I nearly hit the deck on concrete. OP if your dog had caused a similar accident (with the rider actually falling off) how do you plan to cover that if you have no insurance but you expect to claim off some one else. Personally after the amount of hassle I have had off liveries dogs I would rather none were on the yard. It is always an accident waiting to happpen.
