My pony poo'd in her water drinker last night (before anyone was down). I noticed around 10 this morning and gave her a bucket of water before I tacked her up as I didn't have time to clean the water drinker out as I was taking people on a hack (work). I also noticed she hadn't touched her hay. She drank the whole bucket (I just assumed she was thirsty and she does drink a lot) I took her rug off, put her tack on and then she started shaking, and when I say that I mean violently shaking she was clamped in and staring at her water drinker as if she was still thirsty. My boss came to look and we came to the decision I should still ride her to see if we could get her to relax, she relaxed after about 5 minutes and by the time I got back she had stopped shaking. When I got back her water drinker had been cleaned and she went straight to it and drank for nearly 15 minutes straight. She seems fine now but she definitely got a fright. Any ideas if this is a horse tying up or is this something else?

If she'd tied up she wouldn't have been able to move so I think something else. Maybe just dehydrated? Does sound strange and not sure I would have ridden her to be honest (if a horse does tie up the worst thing to do is to make it move!) But at least she seems fine now, hopefully it won't happen again but would def keep an eye on her.

Not sure dehydration would cause her to shake like that? My boss has some experience of horses tying up and she always finds the best thing to do is move them, even if it is harder to start with, they do ease. Thanks

I have a pony who has tied up twice. First time I was out riding and about 1.5 miles from home. Unfortunately I couldn't get transport so had to lead pony home. The walking made the attack worse so would agree that if your horse was able to go on a hack then I would suspect something other than tying up.

Maybe thumps, if she was that dehydrated? Though that's more normally associated with horses that have worked very hard.

Doesn't sound as though the horse tyed up at all, nothing like the right symptoms, I would keep a careful eye and if it happens again call your vet.

She is back to normal this morning but we turned her drinker off and gave her a bucket so we can monitor her. Nobody had ever seen anything like it before.

Doesn't sound like any tying up I've seen.

Muscles mass goes hard, like rock - neck, shoulders, quarters. Movement is the last thing they want to do, or are able to do. We had to push and pull and practically try and carry one pony into his stable. Horrible. Definitely couldn't have been worked.

Little Cob had vet and box rest; then turned out, but he got worse, so back to box rest.

It sounds like the OP's pony was dehydrated.
