Horse Valuation Expert

Can anyone recommend a good horse valuation expert? Please PM me with details if you can. The horse in question is deceased but subject to a claim against a third party.

I had Brightwells do an independent valuation for a loss of horse insurance claim on my last horse, I wasn't in contact with them personally as I was not policyholder (my dad was), but know the insurance company were happy to accept their valuation and they were very helpful and polite (unlike the insurance company!).

If this is a legal case then a FBHS used to be the 'expert witness' that was always called on in England. You would need to present evidence of competition record, breeding and perhaps testimonials as to temperament etc from people that knew the horse eg yard owner, instructor, PC DC. Unsure as to situation in Scotland. Perhaps talk to BHS for recommendations as to type of individual to search out?

Thank you! The other party commissioned a report from Brightwells so can't use them.

Thank you! That's very helpful. It is a legal case and my lawyer informed me today that she has contacted the BHS for advice on this matter so she'll hopefully get some contact details of some FBHS. Great!

I would second getting the other information as well. We had the official valuation, presented with testimonials from my instructor, PC DC, a friend who is a small time dealer and member of hunt staff knew horse well, saying a little about temperament, performance and saying that in their opinion the horse was worth the stated amount. In our case, we were trying to convince the insurance company that horses market value was the same amount she was insured for (they suggested it was half the amount, which everyone I spoke to said was ridiculous), we did eventually win the case and they paid out. I hope the BHS come back to you with some helpful information and you can get things sorted out

Thanks, that is really helpful. I wanted them to consult my vet who knew the horse and told me one day, unsolicited, what he thought the horse was worth. It was almost identical to the amount claimed. They have offered 20% of that. In their dreams!

Unless it has a competition record you will be on a loser im afraid as the best valuers in the world can work with nothing and as they say potential is worth nothing.

So using that theory every young horse is worth nothing until it has proved itself, of course potential has a value, if the horse is young that, and it's breeding, is all you can use to put a price on it, we don't know the story of the OP so cannot make a judgement on the value of their horse, all they were asking for was advice on who could put a market value on it.

20% is probably far lower than it's market value, most young well bred horses will be worth around £5k, ballpark figure, 20% of that is a pittance if it was a homebred it will not cover the cost of getting the foal on the ground.
