Horse vans - price?

Horse vans? I assume you mean the 3.5T renault types?

I've seen ancient ones for about 5K, call me a snob but I wouldn't put my horse in one!

Yup, them. Heard good & bad about them but only have one (small) horse to transport, and it would be a good 'all round' vehicle that myself & my dad could share for various reasons, so I'm figuring it's looking to be about the best option! Just to fully persuade my father now...

I do think they are great little lorries, although like all things you get good and bad ones.

Like you, I only have one small horse so a 3.5T will suit me down to the ground. Like all transport there are things to look out for, safety will be top of my list of priorities, be sure to check the bulkhead has been reinforced. Personally I would want double doors at the rear or a very large single door as an emergency horse exit...things like that.

Alexanders have a series of videos on horsemart about safety features in 3.5T, worth watching :)

Thanks :) I will check them out at some point!

Mine (04 reg) cost me approx 11k 2 years ago. Wouldn't be without it - worth every penny!

I keep trying to tell dad that it would, in a sense, 'pay for itself' - not that it would actually make us money, but it would just be so useful and so much less hassle! (had a trailer AND a big lorry before - not that I could drive either as only passed my driving test a few months ago but neither parent wanted to drive them either!!) I could at least drive myself around in a van

mines been fab, as a lorry but also for moving house, collecting hay and as storage! down side is ive only been out to a show in it once for several reasons LOL. but every one else uses it (with hubby driving)

Ok, I'll call you a snob - "SNOB"!!

I have a 2004 plate one and I carry either my 15.3hh or my 16.1hh in it. They are great.
Mine cost me £9000 just under two years ago, but I did get the bulkhead reinforced after I had bought it, and an internal light fitted in the horse area, so I spent about another £300 on it. It has also cost me a fortune in repairs, however that was about a year ago when I decided that i would get a lot of things done at once.

The vans are great, despite people saying they are sardine tins, or only useful as burger vans. These vans are generally used as minibuses, or ambulances and as a result of this, they are crash tested to check that they will crumple, instead of fold if they are involved in a collision. Box vans, on the other hand, although they look smarter and sturdier are not crash tested and will fold in the event of a collision, so are actually not as good.
Like someone else said - either get your bulkhead reinforced after you buy it - I found an excellent steel fabricator to do mine, or make sure it is done before you buy it. The vans generally have double doors at the back as well, so can be used as a second exit in the case of an emergency.

You're a snob! :D

Seriously now, why wouldn't you?

I usually travel my boys in our trailer, but last week our 4x4 let us down and I had to borrow my friends Renault Master to get from Manchester to the Anglesey show. My 2 year old, who usually neighs and stamps for most of any journey actually fell asleep whilst travelling in this box.
I'm now looking for one to buy.

My friend's box was advertised for £6k, but she actually only paid £4k for it, so it's worth haggling to get a bargain.

we bought one for £9000 a few months ago its 6yr old and is a real god send! they are great we were looking for a 7.5 tonner but thought we would try a 3.5 and loved it they are so easy too use just make sure it has a gap between the horse bit and the cab and has been converted properly as my friend got one he horse kicked and the kick went threw in to drivers seat which is obviously not good! mine is more like a cab and chassis instead of a van but i do recomend them we have camped in ours and although they dont have a proper living they are still great you can get them with full livings on the back now a swell which are fab but at a cost as per ;)...if your looking for a bargain i would ask around as well as searching the internet and try too find a private seller not a dealer and be patient if you want a bargain but quick when youve found one cause everybody seems too want a van these days :L

and 'gingercat' my pony loves travelling in the vans too, he didnt used to load untill we got this and now he goes on anything like a dream and he also used too stamp and move in the trailer but just seems too stand there and eat his haylage now :D
