Hi Everyone, wondered if anyone had any advice

My Brother has got a grey connemara, we have had quite a bad summer with him. When ridden he gets very, very itchy and even with a rug on if he is just warm he gets very itchy. Even if not worked hard all he wants to do is get back in his stable for a good itch.

We think some of it might be sweet itch which we are treating on his mane.

We discovered that he was anemic and has been treated with iron, we orignially thought that he was allergic to something but tests have not come back showing the same.

We have now clipped him out to cool him down, does anyone know of a cooling aid that can be used to cool his system down after work? he is a fab little pony but is very lathegic during the summer due to him getting so hot.

Would be grateful to know if anyone else has come across the same

Thanks xxxx

If it is sweet itch I can sympathise ALOT! My boy gets it but if treated correctly it is managable. Its the only time I wish for winter, when I see him getting the hump with all the midges!

I have found that keeping him as cool as possible does help, over rugging him makes him worse, so have been trying to keep him naked for as long as possible.

I invested in a sweet itch rug, which has been fantastic, def cuts down on the itching. I also have been putting on a lotion called 'kill itch' it has helped loads.

My boy is a maxi cob, and a very hairy one at that, I keep him clipped all year round, hogged the lot as his coat is very thick, this helps also.
