Whenever I go to my horse to tack it up, it takes a huge dislike to the saddle and bridle.
Both have been checked and fit perfectly.
Previously, his owners had been awful to him, kicking him, hitting him etc, which I think is the reason for him not liking them.
On the ground he trusts me and generally we have a brilliant bond, but he can sometimes be abit strong to lead when walking up to the field and things like that.
Ive had him for about 3 months, and he slowly started to get better with the saddle and bridle and he'd stand still 9 times out of 10 and not make a fuss. Id let him smell both before putting them on and patting him for accepting it etc. But I went on holiday for a week and when I came back, I tried to tack up to ride and he was the same, spinning when id try to put his saddle up and he'd put his head really high so I couldnt get the bit in his mouth...
Just wondering if anybody has had horses like this and what I can do to help him again? Help appreciated

raff was the same when i got him (with the saddle)

he used to run away and spin. try to hide etc etc.

i got people to hold him or tied him up. and i put the numnah on first. then the saddle very gently. i always do the girth up very very loosely to start with, and then do it gradually.

he probably associates it with pain. so make sure it's as comfy as poss for him (i have been known to warm a very cold numnah up...

This is how I tack up Clipcloppop! Mine can also be difficult with a saddle. I go one step further with him Numnah / saddlecloth on first. Saddle next (without stirrups or girth attached). Attach numnah / cloth to saddle. Loosely do up girth (hole one on each side), then attach stirrups. I am sure that most coudn't be bothered with all that, but its our routine now, and he is happy with it. I did bung the lot on in one go a few months ago as I was in a hurry, but he didn't like it much! Yes - I'm way too soft! Can't help with the bridle though! He's brilliant. Turns his head to pick up the bit in his teeth!

Silly question. But have you tried putting something like a polo on the otherside of the bit so as he takes the bit he gets a treat straight away, therefore sees the bit as a nice thing?
