I went out hacking today with a lovely girl from my yard. We hacked past a field of ponies including one coloured gelding. The girl then told me about this geldings penis (lovely conversation!) but once I looked at it...

It was out. About 4 inches from the end is a massive round growth. Not growing out of the sheath itself, but it looked almost as if there was a ball inside there...

The girl proceeded to tell me his penis is always out (I should think so too - the lump would clearly prevent him rolling it back in!!) and that lump has been there for weeks.

What is the lump do you think? And is it a situation where I should be thinking of mentioning it to someone - or should I just keep out of it, like Im inclined to do...

This is where I find it hard to cope with. Most of us self vet, a knock, a scrape - i think a lot of us will hold back on calling the vet to see if we can sort the problem with rest or whatnot
BUT
if you have a horse with a swollen penis - surely thats the time you have to bite the bullet and call the vet, no matter what the cost?

I wonder if he can pee?... I just can't think that the owner wouldn't know and/or be taking appropriate steps..

Sarcoid? Build up of smegma?? Melanoma?

TBH it could be anything but unless you could mention it to the owner or YO not sure there is much you can do. I doubt RSPCA would be interested as the horses are fed and watered??

Ask girl/someone else on your yard who the pony belongs to? If he was in otherwise good condition it may be already being dealt with so go cautiously but if not a gentle word might actually be appreciated - however blush-making for you!

If it is a child's pony they could easily not really know what is/isn't normal - had more than one friend (including an adult man!) who took their first boy hamster to the vet to ask about the two round 'growths' that appeared near the back end once it reached adulthood!

Oh yes he looks in alright condition, plenty of hay there for them all. Some rugged (somewhat unsuccessfully

)
I will ask my YO if she knows who's land that is - always a good place to start.

Most likely a tumour, especially if pony has any white markings underneath (grey skin more prone unfortunately).

Years ago I had a pony who got a lump on the end of his penis. He was referred to RVC and had the end of his penis removed, relatively simple operation and he was fine after (bet that brings tears to the eyes of any blokes on here!).

I'm sure it must be uncomfortable for him, so hope you have some luck tracing owner/s. If that doesn't work, can you leave a note on the gate, politely but firmly pointing out the problem?! Failing that it needs to be WHW/welfare organisation.

Was it the field of meat ponies your on about? (hundred and hundreds of coloureds) I have that guys number if its one of his but im sure he doesnt care too much.

No (but I didnt know they were meat neddies) its further up the lane, towards Wick. They looked like owned ponies - some had rugs on etc.

They are indeed meat ponies (thes one im on about, not the one you saw)

I knew a girl who knocked on his door, offered him £600 for two of them and she spent the next 2 hours catching the ones she wanted, loaded them up and off she went!
He doesnt care either way- theyre all for sale, people just dont realise!

proper bargain, alot of them are ex-riding ponies or perfectly nice alrounders who went through the sales.

She took one baby i think and one ridden one who she competed BSJA with and sold for a stupid amount. They're all very friendly, i used to fuss them over the gate alot.

ETA: ill stop hijacking now, sorry.

Maybe has an infection ..
I remember when Eric was poorly, his bits were enormous, Picture below:

A pony on my yard had something that sounds similar - turned out to be cancer, we were worried about the vets operating as he is old (25) but apparently its quite a simple procedure - the poor chap had 4ins of his penis removed!

Please read cancer of the penis on vet page (page 4 or 5 now)
Our pony had cancer and although he never got it out the vet told us that when the tumour is very large they can't withdraw back into the sheath. By the time that ours had his penis removed it had spread into his lymph nodes.
It was extremely difficult for him to pee. That is why we realised that he had a problem. He stood in the weeing position for hours but didn't go. I felt so guilty that he didn't realise till it was too late.
Does this pony stand like that?
I would be inclined for phone the rspca and tell them.
