hi there.

one of my horses has just been diagnosed as anemic. i haven't had a chance to have a long chat about the ins and outs of it, treatment etc.... i was just wondering if anyone here has had a horse with anemia? if so, how has it affected them? what treatment did you give etc? my boy's been lacking umph while jumping....

yyup, I had a pony who similar to yours was lacking oomph and just started looking unwell, strange stance and not his normal self. Got blood tested and he was pretty badly aneamic. We had 2 weeks until PC champs in England. He had Red cell (I think) , electrolytes, antibiotics and not sure if he had anything else and 2 weeks rest. He was right as rain after those two weeks, and not bothered by the trip over, one day eventing, one day showjumping.

my old horse did a few years ago, as others have said you can give red cell or similar.or for the free option pick some stinging nettles dry them then cut them and mix in with feed

Yep pro pell or red cell should do the trick. They worked for my chap when he was anaemic!

We used to have a pony who suffered with red worm and we used to feed her red cell as well as worming regularly to prevent her becoming anemic ( when we bought her she was very badly anemic )
We never had a problem after that

i had a pony that i got from goresbridge and he had anemia. he had a bit of a cough as well. he had a course of antiobiotics and was on red cell it worked really well. it really gave him a boost

Yup, mare got a bad virus and ended up very anaemic.

Vet gave a course of HB and I used Equestro's Hemolyton and then red cell again
He also have her a Vit B and K injection plus vits and mins - took about a month for her to come totally right.

Oooh another person (horse sorry) on Equisup .... Peter is your mare still on it?

My old Cushings horse is on it and really enjoys his tea as long as it is it in

.... I keep buying it and the Vet seems to think he is ok taking in continually (he is on 20ml a ay)

16 years ago he was diagnosed as Anaemic and was on a 'tonic' as it was called in those days, but as he is a faddy eater, I think this is the best way of getting iron into him
