Does anyone have any experience of a horse who has broken a rib?

How was it treated? What was the outcome?

Did the horse have any trouble working afterwards? Was there difficulty with saddle fitting?

Any experiences would be helpful

I knew a rescued horse who'd had broken ribs, only thing different about her was she had a lump. I only really hacked her though so no idea if it had real affects on her flexibility but I certainly never noticed anything. It was a low rib though so no saddle issues

Hi,
My pony broke a rib in the stable - don't ask! - high up just behind where your knee goes on the saddle. The treatment was a course of bute for pain and inflammation and box rest for 2 weeks as he was quite lame and it a lot of pain. The biggest problem he experienced was the oedema which developed on his tummy below the rib and behind his elbow. A course of Bowen treatment really helped disperse the oedema but it took ages to go, about 3 months. He has suffered no ill effects but I now find he prefers an elastic girth to non elastic as he doen't like the restrictive feeling. I have tried both and he definitely prefers elastic. No trouble with saddle fitting either.
Good luck.

My old pony broke a rib whilst recovering from an operation. Unfortunatley it splintered when it broken and he had to have another operation to remove the pieces as they got infected. He had a large amount of his side cut away too as the flesh had begun to die. it was horriffic to be honest but he recovered well from it. I have photos i can post if you wish, but they are disgusting i warn you!
