had a phone call off the yard owner 2day saying my boy got cast an they managed to get him up full of cuts am grazes all over his face am his right foreleg very swollen an tender
wonderd what you would put over his wounds on his head as its close 2 his eye?
he's not lame at all

Aah your poor lad, what a shame, he looks a nice sort. I would just put some cream on his face or derma gel but not near his eyes. He will heal in next to no time. If his leg is still swollen then it might be that he's pulled his tendon in his struggle to get up. My horse got his shoe caught in the handle of a tub trug which was fixed to my trailer whilst at a show and his leg blew up but after about four days of ice cupping, and claying it was fine.

Hope he is better soon. If it happens on a regular basis then you might like to invest in an anti cast roller but I'm not sure how effective they are. My horse got cast a few times in my stable (our stables are massive) and the one time I had to sit on his head to stop him struggling whilst people ran round looking for lead ropes to pull him over. He is lucky he didn't have a dent in his head with my weight, lol.

haha its the 1st time it has happend his stable is quite small i am waiting on another 1 i did think he had pulled his tenden as thats were the swelling is and around his fetlock i feel so bad :-(

I would just let the air at his wounds and not put any cream on. There shouldn't be any infection as it looks like he has just skinned himself, poor lad.
Cold hose swollen legs for a couple of days and turn out, then if still swollen call vet.
Hope he gets better soon and stops doing silly things like getting cast and getting hurt.

i have no turn-out at the moment i hosed his legs and walked him he mustent have been that bad as he was draggin me around the yard he doesnt like water lol they are just grazes i washed them with hibiscrub

As others have advised, I wouldn't put anything on a cut that close to an eye. Whatever you put on it would almost certainly run down and into his eye and you'd have a whole different problem on your hands. Don't put anything in the water you bathe it with either - same reasons. Just wipe gently with plain water, boiled and cooled.

The things that would worry me though are a) why did he get cast and b) how come you have NO turnout? Watch your horse like a hawk. He may have rolled because he needs to and he can't do it in the field which should tell you something, ie find livery that does have turnout. He may have rolled because he's got a low grade bellyache, possibly stress, who knows. Has his bed been churned up on other occasions? Colic alert.

went up today the 1 above is eye seems 2 be weeping he hasnt got colic hes fine in him self bed is as normal really apart from that day an we dont have winter turn-out due the snow an muddy fields he does lie down for an afternoon nap an as i said his stable is quite small so we thinks he has lay to close too the wall so massive bankins from now on an waiting for a swop with 1 of the other liverys i have been looking for other yards there all full up for the winter an i have been on the waiting list at 4 different yard for over 3 months this yard was the only one
