My mare didn't want to eat her breakfast this morning, which is very unusual for her, she also wasn't savvy in getting out of her fieldmates way etc., so I brought her in and called the vet. she was shivering, so I put an extra rug on.

Vet came out and examined her and her temperature was up, found nothing else abnormal, but took bloods just in case and gave her antibiotics and bute, just in case.

She normally lives out 24/7 with a big bale of hay. Shes in a medium weight rug and is arab. generally shes a hot horse gets too warm if I put a heavyweight on her, do you think she has caught a chill as it was so cold last night? Any other ideas?

Shes picking at her food now, but not eating properly.

Thanks

She has probably got a virus and felt shivery because of that rather than the cold weather causing her to be unwell, keep an eye on her temperature, make sure she is not getting too hot or cold by changing rugs when you need to and she should brighten up soon.
The antibiotics will help if she has an infection, the bute will make her feel more comfy and the blood test results will probably show there is not too much to worry about.

Sorry I never got round to updating this. My mare had colitis and was very very poorly on Saturday night, we almost lost her, her temp went through the roof, heart and respiratory rates double what they should be. Whats scary is how quickly she went from being slightly ill to down and very ill. Somehow she is still here and starting to recover. It's been a long weekend!

Sorry she was so poorly and pleased she is now on the mend. Your prompt action in getting the vet will have really helped her as she was seen quickly and could get the treatment she needed.
