Has anyone had a horse with a fractured scapula
He has been to vets and scapula is fractured near his withers.
muscles have torn away from scapula and caused bones chips in process very very sad horse, he is totally depressed and we are really upset for him
just got him sound with hock injections as he has arthritic hocks and now this
he is a 13 year old ex racehorse he is a really sweetie in the box typical racehorse outside
totally mental to ride but jumps like a stag and we have had him for 5 years he has only ever had 2 homes
He has always been rugged and stabled and treated like the prince that he is
now vet says turn him out for 3 months and he SHOULD come sound
I just want to know if anyone else has had this injury and how their horse progressed as he is not coping at all well at the moment

My mare fractured hers when she was 8 months old. She is now 23yrs!! She has a scar on it and she broke the spine of the scapula off. She basically had a huge hole in her shoulder which I had to syringe out each day. It took a good 8 months to heal but she then had a number abscesses erupt from the wound until my vet put her on antibiotics for 6 weeks. This was a long time ago so I am sure treatment would be different now. She is sound on it.

Sorry no experience of this injury, but my old TB thrived when turned out 24/7 (rugged as required and ad lib hay) so I would follow the Vet's advice, infact I would be happy to field rest for longer if needed. :)

I hope he comes sound.

My old horse shattered his scapula when I first had him - he was about 19 then. He had about 2 months box rest, and a huge haematoma formed on his shoulder; eventually this burst. After that had healed a bit more, he started going out during the day for another couple of months, then I started riding him again - we went on to have a full life together, and eventually his heart gave out on him when he was 29.

Don't give up on him yet!

thanks for all the replys, we will never give up but he has had best part of a year off now with his hocks etc and i just wonder how much more pain and discomfort he can cope with he is normally a happy bubbly horse and at the moment is the complete opposite and its horrible to see. He has been like this for 3 weeks now and is obviously in a lot of pain. I am just concerned that we were told to turn him out and all the time he is moving he is in pain how is it going to heal if it is still being pulled around ?

you could always try turmeric? If you're on facebook look up the turmeric users group and I've heard comfrey helps with breaks, have a search through the threads on here.
