a while ago whilst getting my boy, (who i had only had for two weeks at this point) in from the field, i took his fly mask off to find a whole that you could fit three fingures in, straight through his skull and into his sinus :( ! after having the emergency vet out ( who said it would take four months or more to heal :( ) 6 weeks later the whole is now closing up and he is ridable :), but every time the scab forms he knocks it off causing it to open up again. has any body had a horse thats done this, and how long did it take to heal / did it leave any lasting affects ?

i have no advice or answers to question im afraid, but just wanted to say that what happened sounded awful but im glad he is making a good recovery and hopes he carries on to xxxx

Where abouts on your horses head is the hole? Is it perfectly round? It sounds like he may have had his sinus trephined and flushed before you got him as you havent had him very long and the scab has fallen off.

If so then they do take quite a while to heal over and can get knocked off quite easily. Did you have your horse vetted before you got him?

he actually did his head after we had bought him! yes when he did it the whole was like quite a clean whole. it then healed over and the vet told us to take the bandage off, but the rain got to it and it then fell off because of the wet. it did go through his sinus and he was bleeding from the nose for a couple of weeks.

thank you.. i am told he will make a full recovery... he has just forgotten how to act like a normal horse and has gained an attitude from somewhere... but he was such a gem all through the injury hes aloud to be a little grumpy now! hes definatly earned it bless him!

There was a racehorse down at the local yard that came in with a huge hole in her head :( At first they thought she had been shot at but later think she just spiked herself on something.

It had to be flushed and drained daily to start with as it had also gone through her sinuses - ie flush out the hole and the contents came out of her nose!

However, she fully recovered and went on to win a couple of races :D

Tragically though she was pts on the course a month or so ago as she was struck into by another horse in the race :(

This happened exactly to my young horse in May. He was kicked in the head by another horse in the field - tho thankfully it never had back shoes on or my poor baby wouldnt be here anymore. I fed him 2 x20cc Arnica tablets twice a day and I swear thats how he healed so well and so quickly. Vets were amazing with him as at first they werent sure about how it would go but they were astounded how good he was throughout and how well he healed, it prob took about 6-8wks to heal over properly but like u when he itched it etc it would open again and being in the summer the flies were just starting and annoying him. Now u wud hardly know anything had happened but at the time I thought I was going to lose him. Here is a photo of the hole thru tho.. Not very pretty.

My guy fractured his skull on a fence post(dope,lol)...fortunately he didnt have any holes in his head, but he has a ridge between his eyes which has gone down slowly...he had sinusitus and chewing problems bless him...full recovery,as vet said "Huge mass of bone before you hit brain,lol".....There used to be a lady on here called Tia,her horse had the biggest hole in its head, all healed very well :) x

Ha Hadfos thats what my vet said also! Lots of bone before the brain gets damaged, so I cant blame that for my dopey soap-on-a-ropey horsey! :p lol He's always lived in a world of his own unaware of everything/anything bad around him.. I'm just jealous I cant live like that!
But he certainly hasnt had any side effects and it has all healed nicely now just a scattering of white hairs which lucklily is mostly hidden under his forelock.. Very lucky boy..
