A couple of days ago my 4 year old had a temperature of 40.6 and was lethargic and not really eating. Called vet who gave Iv bute and antibiotics. These were repeated again yesterday. Bloods showed high inflammatory markers and one liver enzyme slightly raised, the rest normal. His temperature does return to normal at tones of the day when he looks much better but then will spike again. Has anyone else had this before?vet not ruling out a viral or bacterial cause. We are now on day three though and I'm getting worried 😢 he has had no contact with any other sick horses and everything else in the yard is fine. He is eating same feed, grazing same field as usual. Thanks.

One of my horses (also a 4yr old) had a high temp of 39.1 to 40.0 for three days a few weeks ago. She was also shaking on and off for three days. The first night she was shaking and breathing fast with high heart rate most of the night. She had mild colic and spent a lot of time lying down, didn't drink anything out of water bucket for two days and didn't eat much for nearly a week. She had finadyne and penecillian, no bloods done but belly tap was normal. It was a virus as the following week the mare in the stable next to her had something similar but a lot milder - she only had a temp one day up to 40.1 but was pawing ground and lying down a bit and was only eating half her bucket feed for three days. She didn't have antibiotics but i did give her some oral metacam. Also the horse in the stable the other side of her was pawing ground and lying down bit but he didn't have a temp (or not when i took it anyway) or go off his feed so not sure if he had it, both of them had a feed that the first horse had left the first day. None of my other horses got it and i don't know how the first one got it as no horses had been on or off the yard.
Hope your horse is feeling better soon.

One of mine had a mystery illness similar. She had a v high temp. over 40, totally hanging and not eating. She ended up at the vet school as she had a history of colic and vet was thinking peritonitis.
Her liver enzymes were all raised and she was poorly for about a week, but stayed at the vet school. The checked her for literally every horse disease known and concluded it was cholangiohepatitis which must have come from her own gut. This can happen apparently :(
She was also a bit wobbly which was a worry at the time, but just resolved itself as well.
I think she had about 6-8 weeks antibiotics to finally clear it.
Hope yours is on the mend soon.

Good to know others have had similar. My other one is out and about competing a lot so I wonder if he brought something home with him. He just looks very sorry for himself. Although still able to battle with me when I'm trying to medicate him!
