Horse with no chestnuts?

I have a horse with no chestnuts. Literally doesn't have them. Vet has seen him and verifies the horse doesn't have them?!

Has anyone ever witnessed this before or have any idea why this would happen?

Very odd, I've never seen a horse without before, small almost non-existent yes but never completely missing. What did your vet say? Had the vet ever not seen them before?

do they not get bigger as they get older! sure they have with my horse - at first really not there then by 15 they are.

She said that she had heard that a lack of chestnuts can be linked to a poor immune system or something like that. I can't quite remember. However I have browsed the web and can't find anything about it at all. Is very odd.

Is it a TB? They're know for having no ergots and occasionally have no hind chestnuts.

Its a strange one but I suppose they dont need them so I wouldnt worry about it. I dont get the link to the poor immune system though?

I may have misheard. We were talking about his crappy immune system in general so I probably have my wires crossed. Is very odd though.

My Section A didn't have any, and my current boy now only has them on his front legs, but very small.

I know of a horse whose chestnut shrunk away and disappeared, he was eventually diagnosed with an auto immune disease (he had other symptoms as well). I think his chestnuts came back a bit once he was started on steriods.

I've had a sec A with none on the hinds. I was told this helps with understanding the difference between a Section A mountain pony, and a normal Section A!! (How true, I really don't know!!)

I had a part bred arab mare who didn't have any ergots, but had normal chestnuts. Apparently, exmoors don't have ergots. but mine was definitely a welsh cross!

Mine didn't have any ergots either. She was a welsh x too, possibly with extra arab going by her shape.
