Horse wont come in

Recently my mare I have owned for 10 years has decided she is not for coming in! I can catch her but the minute I go to walk her in she goes up on her back legs and barges running circles till she gets free (she then stands with me)

Is it possible to get a specialist to come in to deal with this as she is simply too much for me

When all her friends came in she was quiet as a lamb to get.

Naughty/nappy girl! Wear a hat, gloves and use a bridle as standard, carry a stick, rearing is bad and very dangerous. Maybe someone else to get behind her the minute she backs off, then put her back?

I agree, hat and gloves on, a controller headcollar or bridle, and someone behind her with a lunge whip if possible. She will soon learn that it will be easier to comply, but you must commit to it and be consistant.

Would be asking why a horse has suddenly started behaving like this after so long? Could she be in pain?

Has she had a fright in the stables or near the gate?

Mine had a strop when I started making her wear a muzzle during the day. She's not stupid and soon realised that morning catching meant something she didn't like.

I wrap the leadrope around her nose and growl at her. After some huffing and puffing she will usually then walk into the yard without any further silliness. I would agree with seeing whether there is something upsetting yours though - a new fieldmate she doesn't want to leave?

It is absolutely possible to get a specialist in. I'm sure there would be a local natural horsemanship type person nearby - but recommendations are useful I find.

Just re-read your post.

Is it the act of putting on the headcollar or the pressure as you go to lead her? In which case it could be worth checking that she hasn't damaged a nerve and its a pain response.

It sounds like she's fine to be caught, just the leading is an issue - and that's quite a strong response she's giving you.

i recently caught her and kept her in as she was due vacs and shoes. She was fine to ride and lunged quietly which made me worry less about a pain response as she seemed ok in all other situations.

She has done this in the past but occasional episodes rather than an everyday thing.

I discussed it with my vet when she was up and she reckoned hormone and brat but I am open to all suggestions!

Do you always exercise her when you get her in. My mare had a stage of not letting me catch her, when she was in season. Think she associated me with work and it was painful. Wish I'd have put two and two together before now. She was always up for a good hack but when in season I could only get her to leave the yard in one direction.

I make a point of not working her everytime. she sometimes comes in just for feed and supps. Last night I was putting her back out and she walked fine but I had to turn her back to stables due to an approaching vehicle and she started stropping again
