when im schooling and ask for halt spot automatically starts to reinback or turn on the forehand. it's not as if i do ask for a lot of these in the first place!

i sit as still as possible, ive used my voice, dropped my reins, halted him up against a fence everything!!! he just wont stand.

AND THEN when he finally decides to halt normally he is immobile for a second and then turns his head and neck to look at something, completly losing concentration, when i ask him to stop being nosy he does the above (ie, moves around)

How about getting someone to walk with you on the floor and then when you halt use your voice and get your helper to stand by spot and if he moved they can be there to help keep him standing etc..... reward, dont stand for too long as horses will lose their concentration quickly! Just halt, using your voice and aids pat, move on straight away.

ahhhh - thats a problem we've had.

does he get annoyed and not want to stand still (ie temper tantrum) or has he just got ants in his pants?

I found lunging worked well with Ty - get him listening to your voice on the lunge/ground and usually it transfers onto the saddle (but not always!)

try doing some work from the ground using a voice command, halting for just a second then build it up so he's stood for longer - but vary the length of each halt...

once he's got the message from the ground build it into your schooling again starting with the briefest of halts

don't worry i've had the same problem that once halted my horse wouldn't relax - it doesn't take them long to get what you mean

Hmmmm, is he new to it? if hes new to schooling then he will probably chill when hes got used to it and learns that its not very exciting.

A firm tap on the bottom? May be a long shot, but have you tried it? Skye does it often at shows so have practiced more at home. A firm smack on the bottom and she hasnt done it since...reminded her of her manners
