Horse wormers - can these be returned to the vet for a refund?

As the title really.

Went to pay off the balance of my account on friday at my vets and bought a wormer from them as my new yard owner doesn't buy wormers to distribute between liveries so you have to buy your own. I've never bought a wormer in my life as we've always had them supplied so it was a bit of a learning curve! After reading an article in one of the horsey publications I found out it was recommended that horses are wormed after the first frost with Moxidectin for tapeworm and redworm burden.

I asked the vets to put the Equest Pramox on my account and they were happy to but now I have found out that instead of paying £25.00 which is what they have charged me I am able to get one through the post from one of the vet medic pharmacy websites with free p&p for £17.00!!!

Am I able to return the wormer for a refund as I note that from reading the information on these wormer selling sites that they don't accept exchanges for medicines so it may be the same from the vets.

£8 is £8 at the end of the day!

Does anyone know anywhere cheaper than this??
 
They don't know whether it has been suitably stored - they never accept returns for refunds in case you have kept it too warm/cold whatever. I asked once about some bubble packs but no, they wouldn't.
 
Molemec plus from molevalley farmers or any of there other stores is £10.60 (last time I bought a box) and exactly the same product.
 
On here page 5 there is a thread started by BARNABY BEAR about horses that have had colic after the pramox wormer,put me off buying it.
 
It is a known issue with pramox, it depends on the horses worming history and age usually.

Fwiw there is no rush to do encysteds now anyway, so long as before spring. I pref not to use pramox (use equimax or similar instead and equest on its own) but if on the yards programme I will.

popsdosh molemec plus is not the same product as as far as I know the licence on moxidectin hasn't expired yet, molemec plus has ivermectin in it so will not do encysted redworm.
 
Molemec plus is not the same as Equest Pramox. It is ivermectin and praziquantel not moidectin and praziquantel. Interestingly the page on their website does not appear to tell you which drugs are in the product! No wonder people get confused.

It's too early to treat encysted worms, Nov/Dec is the best time, using moxidectin.

I appreciate that the OP did her best to find out what to use but why on earth would the vet sell her that product without suggesting a worm count first to see what was needed? We have the new saliva test for tapeworm now too and many horses will only need one dose of plain Equest in winter to treat encysted redworm and no other wormers all year.
 
Well I've just returned drugs to my vets to be credited...I don't see why you cant pop in and say is there any chance of a credit note as your yard owner also went out and purchased on your behalf....the worst they say is no!
 
Think I might give it a go Beckstar. A friend said she can get me one for £7 as the livery yard she works at buys them for this price in bulk! Huge saving!
 
It is illegal to resell wormers and no where can you buy Equest Pramox for £7.00. These are prescription drugs and sales are restricted to vets, SQPs and pharmacists hopefully to stop over use and random dosing choices.
