My view, FWIW, is that when you take on a horse you take on responsibility for its wellbeing for life, to the best of your ability. It is all very well saying 'oh I'd never have a horse put to sleep', but the reality can be quite different. I can't be arsed to go over all the potential scenarios with an 8-year-old who cannot be ridden, but IMHO if the horse cannot be kept by the current owner (and few people have the luxury of being able to afford a field ornament) then the responsible thing to do is to have it pts. It is the only way of ensuring its future, and is what I would say is the 'right' thing to do - not necessarily the easiest. You see all sorts of poor animals, not just horses, kept alive long after their sell-by date, simply because the owner cannot bring themselves to put them out of their misery.
We're probably all going to get slated for this but I totally agree, if I didn't have my own land and I really wanted to ride I would probably try a bloodbank but if not I'd definitely PTS.
Perhaps its because I see horses now entirely differently to how I did 10 years ago? 10 years ago they were my family if you like - now older and wiser with a real family I reaslise that actually no they are just animals at the end of the day. Yes I love them and yes I will go to great lengths to provide for them and yes I go without many things to have them BUT I now have boudaries which I will not go over.
I don't know what I'd do in that situation. I have kept a retired pony, but he was 19 when I retired him. Would I have done the same with an 8 year old? Probably not. I don't see what the big deal is with putting a horse to sleep - I'd far rather that happened than see the poor horse a year down the line doing the rounds of the sales, probably drugged up to the eyeballs and totally beyond help. If she can't afford or doesn't want to keep it at grass and doesn't want to loan it (although I think I'd look at that option a bit more before I wrote it off), then her choice is made.
I see a lot of people are advocating loaning, but after Patches experience on here and after my own horrific experience it would take a lot for me to trust my boy to someone else again. I'm sure many people feel the same way.
Would PTS if the horse was in pain that could not be 100% stopped. I would retire at livery but would try to find somewhere with poor facilities as it would be cheaper and the facilities would not actually be needed. The person WILL ride again, just not this horse. There'll be people offering rides and maybe in the future it will become necessary to PTS.
