My sister and I are considering a horseback safari holiday next year. Has anyone been on one and has any tips or recommendations or just wants to tell me that it's amazing and I should go for it?

We understand it's not going to be cheap but equally don't want to spend a complete fortune on it. I've found one in Namibia with Unicorn trails which looks brilliant for about £2,300 including flights and transfers.

I worked as a guide on a horseback safari, was in Kenya though :)

It is absolutely amazing - I can't describe how much I loved it!

No tips or insight from me, just wanted to say I hope you have a great time and please post an update on here when you get home! A trip like this is most definitely on my bucket list! There is a fb page called African Horseback Safaris which is worth a peek. I love the look of Macatoo - it's where I want to go :)

My sister and I went to Okapuka in Namibia. It's not big 5 territory but the horses were incredible (all competing endurance horses), long canters, mountain climbs, loads of game, wildebeest, giraffe, all different types of antelope, rhino. We were really lucky in that for some reason we were the only riding guests that week so every day it was just the two of us and a guide. It was the trip of a lifetime. I'd love to do another elsewhere.

Been to wait a little in south Africa, its a big 5 place, so you need to be fit, confident & competent. The horses were fab, very well schooled by the owner who enjoys dressage. Nothing compares to standing feet from a lion on a prey animal, racing giraffe & being charged by elephants ¡
It was truly a holiday of a lifetime, would love to go again.

I went to Botswana with Limpopo valley horse safaris. Not big 5 but lots of elephants. Had a fantastic time. We did the Tuli trail which is Mobile tented safari with two nights spent sleeping in the open. Good we'll schooled horses, great food all cooked on camp fires, fantastic guides. Would go back tomorrow. Amazing experience.

I've been to Macatoo twice and it is the only holiday i didn't want to come home from. Just amazing, a completely different and absorbing world. Galloping with giraffe was hair-raisingly awesome. Go, you won't regret it!

We did this & it was truely the trip of a lifetime :) when Cor visited the UK 3ish years ago he came hunting with us on my super little dexter cob :)

Love riding in Africa, cantering with giraffe has to be one of the best experiences ever! I love Kenya so much! Hippo spotting was amazing! Go for it, decent chaps and endurance tights plus vented hats! Enjoy, I'm jealous already!

I worked at wait a little - not cheap - more of a once in a lifetime and the riding is proper riding as well as amazing wildlife, food, accommodation etc.

Wow, that looks amazing but very, very close!! as in "up close and personal" Do the wildlife not worry so much because you're on a horse? What about lions? I guess that's why the horses are fit and you have to ride well enough to get out of any sticky situations - fast! ;)

Thanks everyone, what amazing pictures!

I think we have decided on Ant's Reserve in South Africa, it looks amazing, says it's all quite flexible as to what you do, how much you ride etc and while it's not big 5 there is a big 5 reserve next door which you can visit. Hoping to get it all booked in this week, we won't be going until June but I am ridiculously excited already!!
